The Director of Learning and Development will play a vital role in this success through the hiring and development of our training teams and helping employees advance their skills and knowledge. This role will work closely with our leadership teams locally and nationally to determine which types of training are most suitable for the company. We are looking for someone with a passion for our mission, a drive for results, resilience, and humility.

Schedule: Ability to work nights and weekends as needed. Part-time and volunteer training will be in the evenings outside traditional business hours. 

Location: Baltimore, MD preferred; remote optional but may require additional travel

Travel: The ability to travel to different Volo cities is required, up to 50% of the time.

Job Description

This role is for you if you are passionate about developing people, believe in the power of play, and enjoy creating lesson plans and evaluations. The nature of this position will be cross-functional and will require strong analytical, communication, and management skills. Our business is out on the field, so be prepared to spend time out at leagues interacting with our players and our staff. Your responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:

Standardizing platforms and resources to ensure strategic programmatic growth

  • Establish and implement local training, evaluation, and culture best practices for our full-time employees

  • Implement local and national milestones to track progress and identify needs

  • Develop and set metrics and tracking to ensure our part-time and full-time teams are performing to the Volo Standard

  • Reviewing new technologies for training applications and recommending effective uses to leadership

Career Development and Strategy

  • Develop opportunities for cross-training and career development for full-time staff to maximize individual and cohort skill sets

  • Design and implement a company-wide mentorship program

  • Developing training materials and providing training services to employees to ensure they are meeting their job requirements

  • Develop supporting materials such as participant guides, job aids, and assessments

  • Select, manage, and develop relationships with external training vendors

  • Manage post-training evaluations and feedback to continuously improve L&D offerings

Retention and appreciation efforts for Full-Time Staff, Part-Time Staff, Interns, and Volunteers

  • Creating organizational culture through communication strategies that align with company values

  • Lead initiatives focused on culture and diversity and inclusion as they relate to full-time staff, part-time staff, interns and volunteers

    • Volo Awards: Part-Time Staff Awards typically hosted in Q4 celebrating the wins of the year recognizing local and national top performers

    • Volo Games: Part-Time Staff appreciation field day

    • Summit: Full-Time Staff conference and awards typically hosted in Q4 celebrating the wins of the year recognizing local and national top performers

Qualifications

  • 4-5 years of professional experience ideally in training or sports programming  

  • Familiarity with the social sports industry (as a player or employee) and its typical schedule and calendar

  • Experience managing a large customer-facing part-time staff workforce

  • Strong ability to execute in a cross functional and startup environment

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Can marshal resources effectively and comfortably navigate a fast-paced, ever-changing environment with minimal supervision

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Dynamic personality interested in working in, and contributing to, the industry leader in adult recreational sports 

  • Ability to work nights and weekends (most hours will be in-office, located near the local team)
