Job Description

The Commercial Analyst (or CA) role supports all day-to-day running of the trading desk, ensuring a detailed position summary is kept for the trader and for the matrix as a whole (if applicable) and that the trader’s exposures are monitored. This may involve the consolidation of data for the trading matrix.  The CA is also accountable for a broader range of activities on the desk, e.g. risk/exposure of trades and ensuring exposure is properly documented and calculated in a consistent manner, the monitoring of futures that are near expiry (where applicable), and determining what to hedge (checked with Trader). The CA is expected to provide commentary on the daily profitability reports to explain P&L movements - this requires the CA to have a strong understanding of the P&L and other relevant market information related to the matrix.  The CA provides all management information and decision support to the Trader, e.g. creating reports and/or undertaking general trading, market, or other modeling and analysis on behalf of Trader. In some cases, this may involve other activities such as rolling storage or internal projects such as supporting the setup of a new business and working with MIS.

Main Activities

  • Maintaining a detailed position summary for their matrix/trader
  • Compiling daily profitability reports showing P&L changes from previous day – and provide commentary on why the movements have taken place
  • Allocating hedging transactions to deals
  • Monitoring trading limits/exposures
  • Cross-check position sheet
  • Updating ETRM and/or other tool/system
  • Ensuring accurate and timely matching of buys and sells
  • Budgeting and allocation of costs
  • Maintaining mark-to-market reports
  • Tracking BL’s through the physical movement of product
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with relevant 3rd parties to support trading activities (as required)
  • Account for the accurate documentation of risk/exposure of trades
  • Liaise with operations and back office over futures that are near their expiry date 
  • CA needs to be vigilant for any unusual activity in trading positions or activity

Experience

  • 1+ years of direct experience working in a energy/commodities trading environment
  • Good understanding of the oil industry and/or financial markets
  • Strong understanding of the trade life cycle
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required
  • Experience working with a trade capture system is strongly preferred
