Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Database Design and Implementation: Responsible for designing and implementing effective database structures based on project requirements. They are also involved in delivering on architectural improvements that are efficient and scalable.
  • Performance Tuning and Maintenance: Responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and security of databases. They identify and troubleshoot issues, conduct regular system tests, and implement backup and recovery procedures.
  • Data Integration and ETL Processes: The Senior Database Engineer should be comfortable with developing and implementing methods for data integration from various sources into the database. This often includes creating ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and workflows.
  • Security Management: Protecting the data by establishing appropriate user permissions and roles, implementing security protocols, and regularly monitoring and addressing potential security breaches are a core job requirement for Senior Database Engineers.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: The Senior Database Engineer often works closely with other teams, such as software developers and data analysts, to ensure that the database aligns with the needs of the organization, and to integrate the database with other systems as needed. This often requires strong communication and teamwork skills.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Disaster Recovery Planning: The Senior Database Engineer(s) plays a crucial role in developing and implementing disaster recovery plans. This includes creating and managing backup systems, conducting regular testing to ensure data can be effectively restored, and leading recovery efforts in the event of data loss.
  • Database Documentation and Training: Primarily responsible for maintaining comprehensive documentation of database designs, configurations, procedures, and any changes or upgrades. Additionally, they may be required to provide training and support to other team members, helping them understand the database systems and how to interact with them effectively.
  • Staying Up-to-Date and Implementing New Technologies: Database technology evolves rapidly, so it's essential for ALL Database Engineers to stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and best practices in the field. They research and learn about new technologies, assess their potential benefits and drawbacks, and implement suitable ones to enhance the organization's data management capabilities.
  • On-Call Support: Senior Database Engineer(s) will be part of an on-call rotation to respond to emergency incidents. This responsibility entails being available during non-business hours to quickly address and resolve any critical issues or system malfunctions that affect the database's availability or performance, thus minimizing downtime and potential impact on business operations.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in related field (i.e. Computer Science,
Management Information Systems)
• In lieu of degree, a high school diploma/equivalent with 7 or more years
related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and
experience will be considered
• 5+ years of experience with relational databases (i.e. SQL Server, Postgres,
MySQL)
• Experienced in production environments
• Intermediate to advanced understanding of RDBMS best practices and
industry trends
• Intermediate to advanced understanding of NoSQL best practices and
industry trends
• Proficiency in Windows Server and Linux operating systems
• Familiarity with programming languages (Python, Go, Java, C++, .net)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Analytical skills with experience in troubleshooting large-scale distributed
systems
• Experience with configuration management and orchestration tools (Ansible,
Terraform, Vagrant)

Preferred Qualifications:
• 3-5+ years of experience with NoSQL technologies like MongoDB, Redis
• 3-5+ years of experience with middleware technologies such as ActiveMQ, or
Kafka
• 3-5+ years of experience with virtualization (VMware and/or Docker) and SAN
technology
• 1-3+ years of experience with IaC tooling such as Terraform and Ansible
• 1-3+ years of experience with running data systems on Kubernetes
