Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) ensures Visa’s Products and Services are engineered and operate at a level that exceeds all the availability and reliability targets. PRE is accountable for the reliability of all Visa’s Products including the underlying Applications, Technologies, and Processes. Position Summary:

Visa Inc. is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Sr. Director of Observability Platform Engineering within the Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) organization leading a team of 35+ Engineers. In this pivotal role, you will lead a global team responsible for the development and management of observability platforms, including logging, tracing, monitoring, and Open Telemetry. Your leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability, performance, and observability of Visa's complex global payment infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on tracing requirements.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Leadership and Strategic Vision: Develop and execute a forward-looking strategic vision for observability within Visa Inc., aligning it with SRE and the company's overarching business objectives. Provide inspirational leadership to global teams, setting clear goals and priorities.

  • Team Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and motivate a diverse team of engineering managers, technical leads, and engineers across multiple locations. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the observability engineering teams.

  • Platform Development: Oversee the design, development, and continuous enhancement of logging, tracing, and monitoring platforms, with a specific focus on meeting tracing requirements. Promote industry best practices to enhance observability across Visa's infrastructure.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology and Best Practices: Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in observability, tracing, and SRE. Evaluate and leverage third-party solutions when appropriate to augment observability capabilities, especially tracing.

  • Performance Optimization: Lead initiatives to optimize observability platforms for efficient data collection, storage, and retrieval, with a strong emphasis on tracing efficiency. Drive resource optimization while maintaining the effectiveness of observability systems.

  • Data Analysis and Insights: Foster data-driven decision-making by providing in-depth insights into system behavior and performance using observability and tracing data. Collaborate with incident response teams to facilitate root cause analysis based on observability and tracing insights.

  • Standardization and Compliance: Establish and enforce industry-leading standards, best practices, and guidelines for monitoring, observability, tracing, and compliance. Ensure compliance with data retention and privacy regulations, with specific attention to tracing data.

  • Collaboration and Budget Management: Collaborate effectively with SRE teams, software engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to seamlessly integrate observability, tracing, and compliance into the development lifecycle. Manage budgetary considerations related to observability platform development and resource allocation.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
• 12+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelors degree, OR 15+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:
• 15 or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 12 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, or MD), PhD with 9+ years of experience in Computer Science or a related field.
• Extensive experience in software engineering, observability tooling, tracing, and leadership roles within the technology sector, with a strong track record of excellence.
• Profound expertise in logging, tracing, monitoring, and observability technologies, with a specific focus on tracing requirements.
• Proven ability to lead and develop global, cross-functional teams within a technology-driven environment.
• Exceptional strategic thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of cloud platforms, container orchestration systems, and best practices in observability and tracing.
• Familiarity with compliance and security practices related to observability, tracing, and data privacy, with a strong emphasis on tracing data.
• Demonstrated ability to balance technical innovation with operational excellence.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Varies upon the needs of the department.

Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

Mental/Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting.  The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is 163,600.00 to 225,000.00 USD, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.
