Job Description

Visa Corporate Tax has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Director – US Tax Controversy, responsible for US federal income and state tax audits including income, indirect, and property taxes. Meeting with tax authorities on a regular basis, researching and developing defense strategies for tax positions, and interfacing with personnel from all areas of the Company to facilitate the collection and analysis of data necessary for tax audit defense. Leading and developing a highly skilled team of tax specialists, this position will report into the VP, North America Tax Operations and will be based in Foster City, CA.

Visa’s Global Tax department comprises a diverse group of over 60 professionals located throughout Visa’s global offices spanning: Foster City, California, London, Miami, Dubai, Singapore, Toronto, and Mumbai. The Global Tax department manages both direct and indirect tax strategy, tax planning and structuring, transfer pricing, controversy, tax policy, and compliance as a US multinational organization.

The Senior Director US Tax Controversy is a senior leadership role within the Visa Global tax function and will partner closely with the Global tax leadership team and other leaders at Visa. These will include Controllership, Legal, Government Engagement, Treasury, Business Development, Corporate Development/ M&A, Financial Planning & Analysis and People teams.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage federal and state tax audits
  • Review and respond to tax authorities Information Document Requests
  • Lead communications with tax authorities to understand, discuss, and bring resolution to complex issues
  • Manage several external consultants and legal counsel regarding advice and negotiation strategies
  • Coordinate with the Company’s tax compliance and provision, transfer pricing and tax planning teams to ensure all aspects of the Company’s tax audits are properly managed, and to provide regular updates regarding audit status
  • Foster relationships with internal Finance, Legal, HR, and business leaders as well as external advisors to ensure complete and timely flow of information to Tax and effective resolution of tax audits
  • Partner with subject matter experts (SMEs) and lead research on a broad range of US domestic, international and transfer pricing tax matters to support planning and positions taken on tax returns.
  • Collaborate with SMEs to develop strategic positions addressing the impact of legislative and other relevant changes to tax audits
  • Develop tax planning strategies based upon audit and controversy resolution experience

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
• 12 years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree or at least 10 years of experience with an Advanced degree (e.g., Masters/MBA/JD/MD) or at least 8 years of work experience with a PhD

Preferred Qualifications:
• 15 or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 12 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, or MD), PhD with 9+ years of experience
• Extensive relevant experience with the IRS or state tax authority, law firm or accounting firm, industry experience in technology a plus
• Prior in-house experience strongly preferred
• Strong foundation of income tax technical knowledge with experience evaluating and advising on tax positions and defending key audits
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to successfully communicate tax positions to tax authorities and status of tax audits to Tax department and finance leadership
• Experience addressing a broad range of federal and state tax issues
• Proven record of successful collaboration with tax and finance stakeholders
• Strategic thinker with ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• A bias toward action and continuous improvement
• Ability to manage and develop junior team members
• A desire to develop and manage best practices and processes to continuously drive efficiencies and outcomes

Additional Information

Work Hours: Varies upon the needs of the department.

Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

Mental/Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting.  The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is 174,600.00 to 240,000.00 USD, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.
