Job Description
Payment and Platform Product Policy is a team focused on creating new products, services and policies to convert more cash payments to card and balance the needs of the four parties in our system. The team creates solutions for large strategic clients to help them build their payments businesses, pilots innovative solutions to grow card acceptance in non-traditional methods and in new segments (e.g., electric vehicle charging) and emerging markets, and ensures payment acceptance practices support both the needs of cardholders and merchants.
This is a global team that evaluates forward looking trends and scenarios to identify opportunities to modernize and improve our rules, policies and programs while creating flexibility to grow Visa core business. Thoughtful adjustments to Visa’s approach drive change in every market Visa operates with some of our largest stakeholders and the leading edge of innovation. Candidates interested in developing additional skills and strengths in strategy, economics, pricing, technology, product development and innovation would be challenged on new topics and high priorities regularly. This role will be based in San Francisco.
The primary responsibilities for this role will be contributing to the ongoing development of Visa’s authorization framework, to lay the foundation for a modern and flexible framework, better suited to anticipate evolving business needs. The authorization framework is being designed provide more merchants and acquirers more options in the way they can seek approval from an issuer to proceed with a transaction. In addition, the framework will design ways to help issuers better manage holds on cardholder funds. The net result is a framework designed to drive an increase in the number of good authorizations in the Visa system.
- Essential Functions
As the Director of Authorization Framework for Payment and Platform Product Policy you will:
- Join a team that creates real, dynamic change and impact at scale
- Contribute to ongoing development of Visa’s authorization framework including assisting in design and leading implementation of required changes to rules, pricing, and Visa systems
- Establish and maintain automated processes for comprehensive revenue tracking, gap analysis to identify opportunities to increase penetration of authorization services
- Partner with our internal and external clients to create new use case opportunities for estimated authorization service
- Collaborate with technology team and business partners to develop new value-added services for clients
- Design, implement, and oversee ongoing management of a comprehensive monitoring program that tracks compliance and takes appropriate corrective steps to remediate any operational aspects of authorizations by merchants and acquirers, issuer behaviors, and general best practices
This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office two days a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% of the time based on business needs.
Qualifications
- 12 years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 8 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters/MBA/JD/MD) or at least 3 years of work experience with a PhD
Preferred Qualifications
- 15 years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 8-10 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 6+ years of work experience with a PhD Professional/Technical/Business
- Background in payments and knowledgeable of Visa’s network/operating model
- Product development experience
- Customer-oriented mindset, knowledgeable in client, customer and partner roles
- Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written and presentation necessary
- Experienced with product development life cycle, including planning, development of product roadmap, defining and supporting goals and strategies, and ongoing management
- Experience in a range of functions including strategy, marketing, operations and finance
- Demonstrated ability to research market trends, competition, and user requirements (primary and secondary research methods)
- Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaborate with cross-functional teams around the world across different time zones
- Track record of increasing responsibility
Additional Information
Work Hours: Varies upon the needs of the department.
Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.
Mental/Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting. The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.

US Applicants Only: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is 183,100.00 USD to 238,000.00 USD, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for annual bonus and equity.
