Job Description

The Data division is part of the Visa's technology organization. The division is responsible for maintaining Visa's data assets and provides value added products and services to drive innovation for our partners and clients, within Visa and globally. The Data Platform organization provides systems and services to make data secure, high quality, rich, fast, and easy to use, therefore enabling Visa with the ability to leverage its data asset in an effective and timely manner to maximize technology/business development and differentiate Visa from others in the payment industry.

As a Senior Technical Staff Engineer in the Data Platform, you will be a technical leader responsible and accountable to lead the engineering team in designing and implementing solutions that enable our users to consume data efficiently, securely, reliably, and in a straightforward manner. This position will report to the Senior Director of Data-as-a-Services development.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a group of Software Engineers to deliver high-quality code to assemble large, complex data sets that meet business requirements using sound software development practices
  • Lead the engineering team to work closely with business partners and data consumers to understand the requirements and build the proper engineering solution
  • Properly communicate the design ideas and development progress to the executive and leadership teams.
  • Work closely and coordinate with the engineering team and crew members to ensure quality products are completed on schedule.
  • Identify and drive opportunities for automation and standardization of existing processes. 
  • Identifies problems and leads the team to devise appropriate innovative solutions to unique problems actively
  • Quality control of work by appropriate reviews
  • Keep up with current and developing engineering trends.
  • Coach and mentor team members and help them grow professionally

 

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of industry experience with a Bachelor’s or 8+ years of experience with Masters in Computer Science or equivalent relevant degree
  • 7+ years working with Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, Presto, and Spark
  • Excellent Java or Python programming skills.
  • Experience working in an agile environment with good software development practices such as CI/CD, code reviews, and test automation
  • Experience in building and deploying scalable and resilient products/solutions from the ground up and owing them in production.
  • Demonstrate initiative by reaching beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others understand the technical nuances of the product of expertise
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate architectural issues and concepts to multiple organization levels and executive management
  • Understanding descriptive and exploratory statistics, predictive modeling, evaluation metrics, decision trees, machine learning algorithms is a plus.
  • Great organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technologist with a strong drive for keeping up with the developments in the related areas in the industry
  • Familiarity with containerization and Kubernetes based deployments
  • Penchant for ensuring proper metrics instrumentation in software components to help facilitate real-time and remote troubleshooting/performance monitoring
  • Experience with solutions built using open-source technologies like Hadoop, Spark, and Hive.
  • Experience with RDBMS and NoSQL databases like MySQL, DB2, Redis, and Cassandra
  • Experience in translating business requirements into sound architectural design
  • Experience using languages like Scala and Golang. Strong on elegant coding, can write very solid prototypes or core components quickly.
  • Experience in working with geographically distributed teams
  • Experience speaking at conferences, developer summits, or virtual events.
  • Experience working in or managing open-source software communities
  • Consistently demonstrates extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity.
  • Broad knowledge about the design and operation of systems outside of specialty
