Job Description

Based in Washington, DC, the Senior Director, Global Government Engagement, will play a central role in devising and executing strategies to build and leverage Visa’s relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in order to advance the company’s business priorities in international markets.  S/he will independently manage and monitor a large portfolio of issues and markets while also leading a team in Washington, DC to advance Visa’s interests on the company’s most pressing global policy priorities. 

The Senior Director will be responsible for representing Visa before the U.S. government and foreign governments as well as in trade associations and other stakeholder groups.  S/he will be a subject matter expert and go-to resource for colleagues on international trade, and sanctions policy issues.  That person will work very closely with colleagues on a wide range of additional global policy issues, including international development, small business enablement, global tax, etc.

Specifically, the successful candidate will coordinate international government relations outreach on a global level.  Core responsibilities include:

·       Identifying legislative, regulatory and political threats on international priorities and coordinating Government Engagement’s response to defend or promote Visa’s business interests. 

·       Strengthening relationships with foreign embassies in Washington, DC, especially those representing key markets for Visa.

·       Managing Visa’s relationships with external consultants, key international industry associations and other third party advocates.

·       Exercising leadership in third party organizations to drive initiatives and coalesce support on issues important to Visa.

·       Coordinating with internal Government Engagement, Legal, Communications, and other functions in shaping the international policy and regulatory issues.

The Senior Director will work closely with Visa executives and colleagues in other functions to develop coordinated approaches to complex problems with a strong focus on business and client impacts, including our colleagues at global headquarters in San Francisco and in our regional hubs in London, Brussels, Dubai, Miami, Toronto, and Singapore.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with extraordinary organizational and writing skills, comfortable covering multiple assignments at once, and capable of quickly and efficiently producing high-quality deliverables on a daily basis. S/he should have experience working in government or the private sector on international issues as well as with or in the financial services and/or technology sectors. Specific knowledge of the payments industry and challenges facing U.S. payments companies in international markets is a plus. Strong background in international trade relations, diplomatic negotiations, and knowledge of international forums and trade policy is required. 



  • 12 years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree; 10 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters/MBA/JD/MD); or a minimum of 5 years of work experience with a PhD

·       12+ years of relevant experience with – and a keen understanding of – the U.S. Congress, executive branch, foreign governments, and international organizations; lobbying experience on international trade and sanctions issues highly preferred

·       Outstanding people leadership skills to manage high performing, talented team

·       Extensive network of professional contacts in the U.S. government and internationally

·       Strong working knowledge of the global payments industry preferred

·       Significant experience preparing and staffing senior business executives to interact in public and private settings with high-level policymakers

·       Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills, including public speaking roles on behalf of a company/government/organization

·       Experience managing and working with external consultants and legal counsel on sensitive business matters

  • Superior time-management skills with respect to setting priorities and managing multiple workflows against tight deadlines
  • Outstanding professional poise and maturity when interacting with internal or external colleagues at every level, all of the time
  • History of good judgment regarding information, which may be confidential or material, non-public

·       Strong appreciation for nuance and demonstrated political acumen

·       Proven track record of consistently productive collaboration with diverse colleagues in a highly-matrixed work environment

·       Ability and willingness to work across multiple time zones, countries and cultures
