Job Description

Foundation Overview: The Visa Foundation seeks to support inclusive economies where individuals, businesses and communities can thrive. Through grantmaking and investing, the Foundation prioritizes the growth of gender diverse and inclusive small businesses. With the belief that micro and small enterprises are the backbone of the global economy, the Visa Foundation is committed to providing access to the tools, resources, and training to help these enterprises fully thrive. As such, the Foundation launched a $200M, 5-year Equitable Access Initiative where $140M of the commitment will be invested through private markets. The Foundation also supports broader community needs as well as humanitarian responses in times of crisis.

Position Summary

The Investments Officer will support the full scope of the impact investment activity at Visa Foundation. They will engage with portfolio companies, program staff and management, and external partners and advisors. They will perform due diligence and analysis for potential and current investments and contribute to portfolio-wide financial and impact analysis and reporting. A passion for impact at scale, strong analytical skills, and comfort with a high degree of autonomy in a collaborative, global foundation are essential for success in this role. This role reports to the Head of Investments.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Strategy: Work with the Head of Investments to implement Visa Foundation’s investment strategy across asset classes and geographies.
  • Origination – Contribute to sector mapping, finding, and evaluating investment opportunities, and building and maintaining relationships with investees. Support the full scope of investment workflow, including pipeline management.
  • Execution – Lead analysis and evaluation of new investment opportunities. Conduct thorough due diligence on opportunities including managing external due diligence advisors. Participate in portfolio performance and forecasting analysis and reporting to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Portfolio Management: Provide targeted support to portfolio companies; assist with portfolio-wide analysis and risk management; help foster learning and connection between portfolio companies. Participate in portfolio performance and forecasting analysis and reporting to a variety of stakeholders. Play a key role in building out new portfolio and impact management tools and datasets
  • Market Research: Monitor the external environment, financial markets, regulatory developments and other trends and best practices related to impact investments in our focus areas.

Qualifications

Basic: 

  • 10 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 8 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters/ MBA/JD/MD) or at least 3 years of work experience with a PhD

Preferred:

  • Passionate about using investments as tool for social and environmental justice.  
  • Previous impact investing experience in an investment function at an investment fund, bank, development finance institution, or related entity with a focus in private equity and/or private debt investments. 
  • Excellent financial modeling and structuring skills and experienced in negotiating. CFA a plus.
  • Ability to integrate technology into work, expert level in Excel and proficient in the rest of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong portfolio management skills and proven ability to drive value in portfolio companies.
  • Comfortable communicating with all levels of stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative mindset, self-starter, and an exceptional work ethic.
  • Experience working in emerging markets. Fluency in Spanish, French, or Swahili is a plus.
