Technical Communications Services (TCS) is responsible for most of Visa’s technical information serving both technology and business departments. With team members in California, Colorado, and Singapore, we support internal Visa teams and external Visa clients, delivering over 300 technical communications solutions each year including user, implementation, and web services guides; online help systems; SharePoint solutions; operational and departmental procedures; release notes and developer guides; API and SDK reference materials; system process flows.

Job Description

As a Senior Technical Editor with TCS, your primary role will be to work with our authoring teams as they write and update technical documents. We envision this role as a writing coach supporting all of TCS’ authoring teams. We are currently moving to our new DITA authoring system and this position will be a key role in helping our authors transition from traditional technical writing to topic-based highly reusable writing.

Senior Technical Editors possess a minimum of 7 years of technical writing or editing experience. They demonstrate strong skills in document analysis, writing, content organization and are able to integrate well with the authoring and support teams.

Responsibilities

Principal responsibilities include:

  • Serve as writing coach for all TCS authors.

  • Demonstrate understanding of and empathy for the needs of the end users of our documentation.

  • Guide authors in analyzing and organizing data and in the writing process.

  • Ensure that authors’ documents comply with department standards for structure and writing quality as stated in the department style guide.

  • Plan and deliver group coaching – for example, writing seminars or facilitated writing exercises.

  • Respond to ad hoc editing requests.

  • Lead the conversation about the role of the editor as we transition from a traditional book-based approach to a topic-based approach delivered using DITA

  • Lead the effort to create writing rules in Acrolinx and maintain the rules going forward. Provide Acrolinx training and support to TCS authors.

  • Lead the TCS Style team and maintain the TCS Style Guide.

  • Document new processes and train other writers to use them.

  • Edit a suite of documentation for consistency across the entire library.

  • Simplify technical documentation for non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of technical writing or editing experience.

  • An undergraduate degree in Information Systems, English, Journalism, Communications, or related technology-focused field.

  • Excellent knowledge and mastery of the structure and content of the English language including the rules of composition and grammar.

  • Solid background in topic-based authoring and principles of minimalism.

  • Previous experience with authoring in DITA and working with Content Management Systems. Component Content Management System experience (preferred.)

  • Experience in using Acrolinx and in managing Acrolinx rules (preferred).

  • Highly driven, enthusiastic, eager, collaborative (especially with multi-cultural teams across the globe and time zone flexibility), and resourceful. Strong customer service, analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Excels at multi-tasking; able to pivot easily. High level of self-awareness; ability to give and receive feedback in a professional and friendly manner.

  • Familiar with advanced authoring software (Adobe FrameMaker and Acrobat), XML editing tools (Oxygen XML), document repositories (Tridion Docs) (preferred.)

  • Knowledgeable with Visa systems or applications (highly preferred.)
