Job Description

The Visa Global Public Policy (GPP) team’s mission is to position the company as a leader in shaping public policies that expand digital payments and promote an open and competitive environment, helping individuals, businesses and economies to thrive. The team develops Visa’s position on key policy issues facing the global electronic payments’ sector, illustrating Visa’s shared value with governments. The team is responsible for proactively aligning business initiatives with policy trends and public policy objectives. The team monitors public policy developments around the world and through evidence-driven research develops novel content that promotes a knowledge-led dialogue on digital payments. The team also provides expert advice to a number of internal stakeholder groups on a broad range of payments policy issues. The team maintains a range of internal and external facing platforms as distribution mechanisms for its content.

Position Summary

  • The Director, Global Public Policy will provide critical insights and generate collateral for use by Visa Inc. executives on a range of public policy topics impacting the company and the broader electronic payments industry.
  • The Director will drive the development and execution of a research agenda, including the development of key outcomes and practical content and tools to ensure that public policy frameworks globally are amenable to the expansion of electronic payments.
  • The Director will work as part of a small group of senior thought leaders in the GPP function. Through strong partnership with other functions and regional business leaders, he/she will be responsible for proactively developing the company’s official public policy positions on a broad range of policy issues  
  • The Director will be based in Visa Inc.’s Head Office in San Francisco and reports to the Senior Director (Head of Content), Global Public Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor payments-related public policy developments across markets and identify emerging policy trends.
  • Develop and execute a dynamic, theme-based research agenda.
  • Provide the Head & Vice President (Global Public Policy), Senior Director (Head of Content) and other business executives with advice arising from this research agenda.
  • Undertake regular needs assessment with key internal stakeholders and adopt the research agenda accordingly.
  • Monitor policy issues in an assigned region. Build deep partnerships with the regional colleagues by proactively identifying opportunities for collaboration and delivering effective solutions. Bring a regional lens to GPP content work and platform and serve as a central point of contact between the assigned region and GPP.
  • Write or commission public policy position papers and develop other practical tools on specific topics that are relevant to Visa’s ongoing interaction with government authorities.
  • Coordinate with other internal functions including, but not limited to, Government Relations, Regulatory Affairs/ Legal, Corporate Strategy, Product, Country and Regional Management, the Chief Economist and Visa Business and Economic Insights, Risk and Corporate Communications to ensure consistency of corporate positions and decisions across all parts of the organization.
  • Support local and regional business executives and Government Relations colleagues with specific requests for information, advice, industry data.
  • Support executive engagements by developing briefing materials, presentations, talking points, etc.
  • Ensure that the team’s central repository of Visa and third party research, regulatory submissions, and other relevant source material is kept up-to-date.

Qualifications

 

  • 5+ years of work experience in either a public policy, management consulting, payment advisory, legal or regulatory capacity.
  • Advanced academic degree in economics, international relations, law, public policy (or a closely related field) from a top-tier institution.
  • Knowledge of the retail electronic payments industry a strong asset.
  • Strong research skills and experience including superior analytical capabilities.
  • High degree of leadership, independent negotiation and decision-making skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills and business savvy.
  • Collaborative working style, solicits buy-in and commitment from colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships and consensus with a variety of constituencies both inside and outside the organization. 
  • Excellent listener who absorbs and respects the opinions of others, but is decisive and able to influence.
  • Highly effective at creating consensus around strategic initiatives utilizing a collaborative, inclusive and engaging decision-making process.
