Job Description

The Team

Visa Consulting and Analytics (VCA) is Visa's consulting division, serves Visa's clients (including card issuers, acquirers and merchants) in solving their strategic problems focused on improving performance and profitability. We deal with the biggest challenges facing payments market leaders within the region and work on some of the most exciting and innovative factors influencing consumer industries within Australia.  Drawing on our expertise in strategy consulting, data analytics, marketing, operations and macroeconomics, VCA drives high impact and tangible financial results. 

VCA enjoys a high profile in the Australia, NZ and South Pacific market and is represented on the local leadership team. The Data Science manager role is a new role and reflective of the increasing demand for VCA services and the growing needs of our customers.  Based in Melbourne, you will report to the Director, VCA and support projects for one of the largest banking clients in the region.

The Role

The Data Science Manager, Visa Consulting and Analytics will work on consulting engagements for a key client in Visa’s Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific region, enabling portfolio growth and improved profitability across the client’s payments businesses. 

These businesses are undergoing significant consumer and regulatory change, competitive disruption and a generational shift in their marketing, appeal and use.  This shift has seen targeted investments within data capability and a data strategy aimed at leveraging partnerships across the broader consumer lifecycle.  The Data Science Manager will work closely within these client teams and help direct and guide thinking on how best to leverage these data partnerships to drive actionable product proposition and consumer insights.  In addition, the Data Science Manager will work closely with Visa’s Asia Pacific regional data scientists and analytics teams and be a key adviser into the broader Visa data strategy. 

Typically, 2-4 months in duration and running in parallel, potential projects could include new product development, loyalty proposition development, portfolio management diagnostics, assessments of digital product and marketing strategies, development of industry landscape evaluations to inform payments strategies, and optimisation of client customer experience and supporting processes.

 

Responsibilities

  • Be the champion of data-driven insight and analytics with the client relationship, form key connections with client data and business analytics senior stakeholders and align VCA objectives to work with the client data strategy

  • Interrogate and use VisaNet and client data to build models that identify performance gaps and improvement opportunities.  Work closely with Asia Pacific regional data and analytics teams to review, direct and confirm modelling and coding outputs

  • Support the preparation of client project proposals, providing input to objectives, scope, deliverables, approach, dependencies, roles and responsibilities

  • Develop fact base by undertaking client interviewing, collecting and analyzing inputs such as client data, and work with VCA colleagues to collect process flows, policies, competitive, industry and environmental information

  • Identify solutions and recommendations that address client objectives and result in performance improvement; leverage relevant VCA methodologies, frameworks and global best practices

  • Collaborate with local client relationship managers and other functional teams to gain insights and support client engagement and execution

  • Design and deliver compelling presentations to illustrate findings, ideas, recommendations within consulting engagements and more broadly; at times physically support implementation at the client site

Qualifications

The Ideal Candidate

You have a background in data and analytics – having worked as an Associate/Data Scientist with programming and problem-solving experience.  You’ve worked with large data sets from the retail, loyalty, financial services, government or other consumer-facing sectors and have a sound grounding in various analytical/modelling techniques, software design and working with statistical models.  You have experience in data analytics toolkits and are passionate about the data industry and the possibilities of data-driven consumer product innovation and development.

You will be curious about the payments industry and keen to work alongside an experienced team in gaining a deeper understanding. You will be client driven, comfortable executing a project end to end and relishing the opportunity to work closely with clients to influence their future performance.

 

Specific skills and experience you will bring are:

  • Proven experience in and passion for the power of analytics to inform and drive strategy and tactics, and proven ability to generate insights from data

  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills, with demonstrated intellectual and analytical rigor

  • Solid data and analytics toolkit with experience in programming, algorithmic problem solving, data structures and software design

  • Experience with SAS, Python, R or similar languages

  • Experience with building machine learning analytical models

  • A track record of strong academic accomplishment with a minimum of an undergraduate degree in a quantitative field (mathematics, statistics, actuarial studies, engineering, computer science etc).

  • Excellent detail orientation, ensuring the highest level of quality/rigor in reports and data analysis

  • Commercial acumen, with experience in working on business/value cases that prove ROI

 

In addition, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Proven presentation skills, including strong oral and written capabilities

  • Self-motivated, results-oriented individual with the ability to progress multiple priorities concurrently

  • Strong team orientation, collaborative, diplomatic, and flexible, able to work effectively in a matrixed organization

  • An ability to adapt to work with new data sets, systems and organizational processes

  • Willingness to travel (10%)
