Job Description

Job Summary:

The Dean for the School of Computer Info Systems serves to coordinate and define policies and procedures for the School of Computer Info Systems.  The Dean may also has concurrent faculty roles and responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

  • Ensure the quality of the current and future academic programs and curricula within the School; lead the curriculum development/review process
  • Assist the university in establishing course standards, assuring consistency of course delivery through regular communications with all faculty teaching assigned courses
  • Oversee the collection, interpretation, and evaluation of educational assessment data for continuous program improvement
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all accrediting and legal requirements related to the curricula, policies, and departmental procedures
  • Ensure cohesion between online and on ground courses/curricula
  • Ensure that student learning outcomes are being achieved throughout the schools at the graduate or undergraduate level; compile and document demonstrated evidence of student learning outcome achievement; make corrective action as needed

Departmental Administration

  • Maintain historical and accreditation information for the School
  • Ensure the efficiency and cohesiveness of course scheduling and events each semester and ensure course coverage each term
  • Along with the relevant Department/Program Chairs, update policies related to the School and ensure their alignment to related accrediting commissions
  • Resolve student or teacher issues and/or complaints in compliance with the VIU Formal Complaint Policy & Procedure
  • Advise and assist in the development of the School’s budget
  • Collect and file program documentation including but not limited to: faculty timesheets, professional development documentation, CAB forms, student placement and advancement files, student progress reports, transfer-out reports, and end-of-term paperwork
  • Ensure that the collection of paperwork including but not limited to: course scheduling, School calendar, syllabi collection and filing, management of resources, etc. has taken place within all areas of the School
  • Supervise Department and Program Chairs, staff, and student staff within the School

Faculty Coordination

  • Coordinate in-house professional development for faculty
  • Develop policies and procedures that lead to successful recruitment efforts to build a team of qualified faculty and staff through the screening of prospective candidates, arranging interviews, and teaching demos as applicable. Review interview and teaching demo feedback and make recommendations on the selection of faculty/staff within the School
  • Provide orientation to new faculty and training as needed; mentor faculty and provide feedback as necessary; inform faculty of professional development opportunities and resources in the field; conduct classroom observations and provide feedback for improvement, and assist in the evaluation of faculty and improvement of their instructional performance


Program Visibility

  • Raise awareness about programs and course offerings to the wider community
  • With the support of related Department and Program Chairs, ensure that the website is up-to-date
  • Advise on marketing materials to ensure accuracy and compliance with accreditation requirements and other related bodies
  •  

Student Services

  • Ensure that students can complete their programs by overseeing the creation and implementation of ongoing course cycles
  • Write, monitor, and enforce the School’s policies and procedures
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of activities and student seminars
  • Approve and document student records such as transfer-out forms, add/drop forms, etc.
  • Oversee grievance committees as necessary


Departmental Compliance (in conjunction with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness)

  • Ensure continual compliance with accrediting requirements (especially programmatic accreditors as applicable)
  • Provide insight and guidance to staff on how to interpret and implement accrediting standards
  • Ensure the documentation of and compliance with accreditation requirements
  • Identify and assess potential compliance-related risks areas; recommend corrective actions to either minimize or remove identified risks; and review, report, and monitor the outcomes
  • Develop and maintain documents that demonstrate conformity to accreditation standards and measures
  • Identify tasks and assignments for staff to ensure compliance with the standards of accreditation of the various accrediting commissions related to VIU the program/School


Service to VIU

  • Assist other departments to develop and improve VIU including but not limited to providing support for marketing materials
  • Assist in accreditation compliance with Institutional Effectiveness
  • Work with marketing to promote related program(s)
  • In conjunction with the IT department, manage the website

Qualifications

  • Terminal Degree in computer science-related field
  • A minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the academic area of expertise for any faculty assignments
  • 10-15 years of faculty experience in higher education
  • Prior experience in higher education administration
  • Knowledge of ACICS, SCHEV, and ABET accreditation
  • Ability to enforce standards of academic integrity and excellence among faculty and students
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships and partnerships within the University and technology community
  • Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods and styles and the ability to evaluate faculty teaching performance
  • Ability to meet required deadlines and timelines for the submission of all departmental and university requirements
  • Experience with Canvas or a similar LMS required
  • Ability to design academic courses
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Solid written and verbal English communication skills
  • Excellent multitasking and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with a highly diverse staff, faculty, and student body
  • Ability to excel in a demanding, outcome-oriented, and dynamic work environment
