Job Description

The Underwriting Manager supervises a team of Underwriters. This leader will plan and oversee the work flow to ensure acceptable service levels and provide technical work guidance. Success in this position is demonstrated by building a cohesive team of Underwriters, effectively applying guidelines and sound underwriting practices, providing intelligent risk assessment and informed decisions while ensuring regulatory compliance and meeting all agreed upon service level agreements.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has supervisory responsibilities; current team is made up of 7 employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring of FHA connection with monthly report to Sr. Management
  • Ensure loans are underwritten in accordance with underwriting standards, risk management factors, regulations and within expected timelines.
  • Updates to underwriting manual as well as distribution and training both wholesale and retail
  • Discussion regarding escrow hold backs (specific to second home title 5)
  • Monitor, review, organize and update underwriting changes. Keep informed of all regulations and guideline changes to assure compliance
  • Distribution of loans to Loan Originators
  • Accountability for non-purchase loans
  • Chase loans or any non-delegated situation
  • Create a point system for underwriters and then monitor point system for continued relevancy
  • Cultivate loyalty and commitment within the underwriting team by fostering an environment of good communication, collaboration, continuous feedback and honesty

General

  • Computer skills – good working knowledge of MS office
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing
  • Proven background in accurate, high volume data entry
  • Proven ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritize

Qualifications

Education and Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred
  • 8-10 years' total experience (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA and new construction)
  • Expert level knowledge of overall mortgage lending processes
  • 2-3 years’ proven experience in managing a team
