Job Description

The Manager, Environmental, Health, Safety will be charged with administering and improving EHS programs for Vi-Jon. Key responsibilities include developing designed locations EHS strategies, implementing policies and procedures, facilitating training, and leading projects to achieve annual targeted reduction goals and efficiency gains. The EHS Manager must have an understanding of current best practices in EHS, demonstrated leadership ability, superior communication skills, and solid experience in cross-functional team leadership and facilitation.  

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

 Attendance: Support multiple locations on all shifts as needed. On-call 24/7 for emergency issues.  

 Safety: Compliance with and proper modeling of all company safety rules, procedures and guidelines is essential.  

•    Be a Leader Champion of our business

•    First point of contact for all EHS matters. Functions as a technical resource to the organization for expertise in EHS functions and collaborates with internal stakeholders and external partners to refine processes and execute projects that support the EHS strategic plan.  

•    Responsible for identifying safety program, policy and culture improvement opportunities and then planning, creating and implementing workplace health and safety plans and procedure, promoting and implementing corrective actions in partnership with affected departments.  

•    Responsible for supporting daily Health and Safety activities for regional locations to include management of policy enforcement, emergency response, accident/incident investigation, audits/inspections, training, record keeping, wellness initiatives, review of SDS forms, etc.  

•    Drive reduction in accidents/incidents through improvement of communication at all employee levels, understanding employee perceptions of safety programs, engagement of middle and upper management, analysis of leading and lagging indicators, and a proactive mindset for engineering risk out of processes.   

•    Coordinate, plan and conduct accident prevention and health and safety training to all locations during all shifts.

•    Continually evaluate and suggest safety process improvements / solutions to prevent safety incidents

•    Be the first point of contact for handling workplace accidents.  Partner with human resources in workers compensation claims management.

•    Evaluate health and safety practice and procedures for risk assessment and following legal guidelines to include inspecting equipment for unsafe workplace conditions.  

•    Monitor employee conformity to all safety and environmental policies, regulations and applicable laws

•    Investigate accidents and conduct root cause analysis in order to implement preventive further incidents

•    Conduct and manage site specific local, state and federal requirements for emissions, disposal and reporting.  

•    Partner with other site EHS Managers to develop, promote and implement corporate Sustainability projects, collect and validate key metrics and KPIs, waste/scrap reduction, recycling activities.  

•    All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; Master’s degree preferred.   

EXPERIENCE: Minimum five years EHS Management experience in an industrial, multi-site environment.  

COMPETENCIES:

•    Extensive knowledge of state and federal EHS laws, regulations and guidelines.  

•    Certified in risk management and health/safety management

•    Requires strong multi-tasking skills with ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate instruction.   Ability to prioritize tasks especially when handling an accident or incident

•    Ability to provide detailed reports and develop safety procedures

•    Ability to understand data analysis and risk assessment

•    Good organizational, leadership and motivational skills

•    Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively to groups at all levels.  

•    Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and capable of mastering multiple EHS-specific computer programs.  

•    Extensive attention to detail to distinguish safety hazards

•    Ability to recognize when safety conditions need improvement

•    Never be complacent, strive for continuous improvement in all that we do

 

 TRAVEL: Ability to travel up to 10% as required. 

Physical Activities:   Standing and walking – 40% of time on job; sitting – 60% of time on job; climbing stairs and ladders – up to 15 times a day; repeated motion of hands (typing) – 30% of time on job; communicating (talking and listening) – 75% of time on job.  Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel; ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to visually track moving objects.  

Visual Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, with the ability to distinguish colors and adjust the eye to bring objects into sharper focus.  

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Worker exposed to extreme heat and cold with temperatures sufficiently high or low to cause bodily discomfort. Exposed to sufficient noise to cause worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Worker exposed to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts. Works in laboratory, production line, and warehouse environments.
