Job Description

As an Earthquake Engineer on our team, you’ll play a crucial role in developing and enhancing the damage estimation component of Verisk Earthquake models. These models cover various regions worldwide and address earthquake related hazards of ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides, fire-following, sprinkler leakage, and tsunamis. In this role, you’ll focus on assessing how these hazards affect the built environment and societies through physical damage, downtime, and human casualties. You’ll collaborate closely with a diverse team of structural and geotechnical engineers, seismologists, and other specialists to perform deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment. You’ll also have the opportunity to present and explain your findings to both internal stakeholders and external clients.

To be successful in this role, you should have a strong technical background in earthquake, structural, geotechnical, or civil engineering. We’re looking for someone who is highly motivated, detail-oriented, an excellent team player, and capable of using problem-solving skills to tackle new areas of modeling as they emerge.

This role is an office-based role in our Boston office, which has a flexible hybrid work model.

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Data acquisition (including post-event survey) and analysis to understand building inventory and their vulnerability in regions of interest
  • Performing analytical studies on damage observations or synthesized data to develop fragility functions for a variety of assets subjected to earthquake shaking, liquefaction, landslide, tsunami, fire and etc.
  • Using data from independent research to assess and validate model components and its overall performance
  • Presenting Verisk models to technical and non-technical audiences and provide support to clients and staff as needed
  • Authoring technical writing for internal and external publications

Qualifications

  • Master with 2+ years of relevant experience or PhD in Earthquake, Structural, Geotechnical, and/or other relevant engineering fields
  • Demonstrated capabilities in probabilistic and stochastic risk assessment and modeling, particularly in earthquake engineering
  • Familiarity with C++ and data mining skills using tools such as R, Matlab and others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Experience with GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
