Job Description

  • Effectively engage, lead, and manage a globally distributed teams of database engineers, and provide hands-on management, mentoring, and coaching of resources while driving organizational goals.
  • People management duties, including hiring, firing, performance reviews, job requirements, interviewing candidates, staffing needs, assignments to team, review of work, growth opportunity for staff, in-person/remote supervision, etc.
  • Effectively communicate Relational database and NoSQL engineering principles, best practices, architecture solutions and infrastructure requirements to firm’s leadership, internal customers, team members and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the team in performing all aspects of NoSQL and Relational database cluster administration including planning, installation, upgrading, patching, security, high availability and resiliency, data retention, tuning, support, and troubleshooting.
  • Drive the architecture of systems to provide a highly scalable, highly available Relational and NoSQL database server structure which enables Verisk’s value proposition for internal and external customers.
  • Work closely with application development as well as other infrastructure teams to test, troubleshoot, and optimize new and existing database-driven applications.
  • Monitor Production, UAT and other NoSQL and Relational database environments across all applicable regions and actively pursue any issues limiting the performance, resiliency, and scalability of these systems, fostering security and database reliability.
  • Understand Relational and NoSQL database Infrastructure architecture and needs, cost optimization goals and security and compliance requirements.
  • Propose, design, and implement scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective Relational and NoSQL database solutions meeting internal and external customers’ objectives.
  • Engage with senior management, peers, and internal customers to plan and prioritize projects and resource allocation.
  • Proactively communicate statuses, issues and escalations to senior management and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field and proven technical background, excellent technical, leadership, problem-solving and people management skills.
  • 7+ years of overall database engineering and/or managerial experience.
  • Proven hands-on experience in database engineering, maintenance, support, and administration for both Relational and NoSQL databases in AWS Cloud environment.
  • In depth understanding of NoSQL database technologies such as Apache Cassandra, Apache Solr, Elasticsearch, AWS OpenSearch, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Redis, etc. as well as multiple Relational DBMSs, including recent versions of AWS Aurora-Postgres, MS SQL Server, Snowflake, Oracle, MySQL, etc.
  • Hands on experience with multi-site HA/DR database implementations, task automation and scripting, focus on execution discipline, internal processes and procedures.
  • Ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences, and to deliver simple and elegant database engineering solutions, utilizing Agile development processes.
  • Proven experience leading teams of Relational and NoSQL database engineers, collaborating and coordinating with internal customers, infrastructure and operations teams and vendors to drive results. Ability to create a supportive, safe, and productive environment for the members of the database engineering team in line with Verisk culture. Servant leadership skills that prioritize the growth, well-being, and empowerment of employees and help staff to develop and perform their best.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate requirements, design, development, integration, test plans, migration/cutover plans and facilitate ongoing documentation of processes and change management.
  • Ability to remain agile and adjust priorities based on workload, management directives and customer demands.
  • Flexible management style: ability to quickly adapt to changing work environments and be hands-on as needed.
  • Proven ability to build internal business and peer relationships and manage business needs and expectations.
  • Experience in cloud-based environment and understanding of AWS technologies.  Experience in budgeting, capacity planning and forecasting a big plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to audiences at all levels.
  • Ability to exercise executive-friendly communication skills.
