We are looking for a passionate Data Engineer to join our growing team of analytics experts. You will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for interdepartmental teams. The optimal candidate will be an experienced data pipeline builder, someone who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up. The Data Engineer will support our cross-functional teams (software developers, data analysts and data scientists) on several data initiatives. You must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products.  

As a Data Engineer with Opta, you will be an integral part of one of Canada's leading analytics companies. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimizing Opta’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives. 

Responsibilities: 

• Design, building and operationalize the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using AWS ‘big data’ technologies 

• Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc. 

• Create and maintain data pipeline architecture 

• Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements 

• Work with stakeholders including the Product, Data and IT teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs 

• Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems 

• 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role 

• Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets. 

• Experience in building large-scale data systems with high performance, great usability and highly satisfied customers 

• Experience with AWS cloud services: Athena, Glue, Lambda, EMR, RDS, Redshift 

• Experience working with infrastructure management tools like CloudFormation or Terraform 

• Experience with distributed systems and NoSQL databases 

• Experience with big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, NiFi etc. 

• Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc. 

• Experience gathering business requirements, formulating metrics and building highly scalable pipelines 

• Ability to create collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams while managing expectations, managing concerns and risks, and communicating progress 

• Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders 

• Proven ability to meet tight deadlines, multi-task, and prioritize workload 

• A work ethic based on a strong desire to exceed expectations. 

• Excellent understanding of software development life cycle and/or agile development environment
