Job Description

The Power & Renewables Research group provides data and insight spanning the entire energy value chain. In power, we combine our deep knowledge of solar, wind, storage, grid, transport, and battery technologies, with our power market modelling to develop detailed fuel and cost outlooks and scenarios. Leveraging our commodity, chemicals, metals and emerging technologies – like hydrogen and CCUS – analysis, we deliver integrated datasets with unrivalled levels of depth. Helping us to cover supply chain, technology costs, policy, fundamentals-based outlooks, scenario modelling, price forecasting, asset valuation, and commodity market landscapes.

We have a dynamic and expanding team in Asia Pacific, which is already the largest regional power market in the world. The region is expected to contribute two thirds of future electricity demand growth and play a leading role in deployment of renewable energy.

Team Profile

This role will serve as part of Wood Mackenzie’s Hydrogen research team which sits within our Power & Renewables Research group. This is an excellent opportunity to join a thriving, global team and make a major contribution to the acceleration of the energy transition.

In the Hydrogen team we model total hydrogen system costs; develop discounted cash flows for individual projects; analyse project criteria; assess midstream opportunities and costs; forecast demand by sub-sector by country; and supply by technology options. We interpret policies and provide alternate forecasts such as our proprietary Accelerated Energy Transition scenarios where our country level modelling reflects alternate pathways on the journey towards net-zero emissions.

Key internal collaborations within Wood Mackenzie are with our expert groups on transport, upstream, gas/LNG, oil/refining, chemicals, steel, metals, power, renewables, CCUS and more.

Role Purpose

Working within our Hydrogen team, this role will be responsible for building and maintaining hydrogen coverage in China and neighboring countries. You will be responsible for forecasting demand by sub-sector using the Hydrogen Team’s existing models and leveraging the full breadth of Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary data, models and expertise.

You will update and develop Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary forecasts rotating swiftly from market to market. You’ll conduct your own primary research to fill in gaps on hard to seek analysis in each market. You will contribute new views, insights and analytics as the market grows.

You will analyse and communicate qualitative and quantitative growth drivers for each market you cover.

You will become a go-to person within Wood Mackenzie to support internal stakeholders as they translate intelligence on each market to each of their business lines. You will integrate your analysis with the rest of the team deliverables, including insights on topics such as regional activity, technology development and policy evolution. You may also contribute to bespoke consulting projects on emerging markets.

Importantly, you will develop your own relationships with industry partners. This will be to establish a knowledge base to test assumptions on market specifics, as well as to represent Wood Mackenzie’s research in a high-quality way to customers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Track developments across the hydrogen value-chain (projects, electrolyser vendors, partnerships, offtake agreements, subsidies, FCEV’s, investments, targets,.) primarily for the Chinese and secondarily for the wider Asia Pacific hydrogen market.
  • Produce regular analyses and written reports and insights on how hydrogen is penetrating sectors within the region.
  • Development of long-term projections of low-carbon hydrogen supply in China. Development of long-term low-carbon hydrogen demand by sector in China.
  • Own and develop the analyses and written content with input from key stakeholders across regional and sectoral knowledge bases.
  • Present findings in market reports, industry insight pieces and in person via conference calls, webinars and conferences.
  • Build a strong relationship with industry stakeholders in emerging market space. Conduct high-quality primary research with project developers, governments and investors on projects, costs, policy updates and market evolution.
  • Strengthen the data apparatus through surveys, interviews, and secondary research. Refresh the analytical models with updated data on a regular basis.
  • Provide high-quality client service to research subscribers through responding to inquiries, one-on-one conversations, and special events.
  • Collaborate with SMEs and internal stakeholders across Wood Mackenzie to support the creation of our content.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of work experience in the Chinese hydrogen or hydrogen-associated industries: including electrolyser vendor, refining/chemicals, and mining industries.
  • 2-3 years of knowledge and hands-on experience of energy modelling of energy-related markets, typically in Microsoft Excel but programmes such as Python as bonus.
  • Previous work or academic experience in any of the following sectors: power and renewables, carbon policies, energy-transition related novel technologies (storage, nuclear, geothermal, hydrogen, CCUS, biofuels).
  • Strong familiarity with policy landscape as it impacts the energy transition
  • Familiar with energy demand, technology adoption and technology cost modelling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions.
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator.
  • Strong communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders across different time zones and as part of a global team.
  • An engaging nature, capable of connecting with co-workers, clients and industry stakeholders in a wide range of professional settings.
  • Passionate, with a deep intellectual curiosity, about the energy transition.
