Job Description

Wood Mackenzie has an exciting opportunity for a Principal SRE focused on AWS Cloud to join a dynamic global business to help drive change and innovation. We’re looking for a skilled DevOps professional to help us setup a new Wood Mackenzie AWS cloud infrastructure. This includes many accounts, transit gateways, governance, and compliance to be managed as part of this process. We are transitioning as part of a divestiture; we need an experienced person to provide guidance on this process and insight for the future.

Role Purpose 

The principal responsibility of this role is to provide operational expertise within the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team and work with the Cloud Ops team to design, manage, and maintain the AWS cloud ecosystem within Wood Mackenzie. This role will work in conjunction with the software engineering teams for releasing and maintaining new and existing applications. This encompasses:

  • Manage the AWS cloud environment to perform efficiently, effectively, and securely through automation and governance best practices.
  • Work in partnership with the business and the technology teams, bringing awareness and insight into the different operational constraints / opportunities for projects targeting cloud-based or on-premises deployment.
  • As a principal member of the team, acts as a mentor for the group, provides guidance around design and approach, constructively challenges service design and implementations, exhibits a high degree of autonomy in making decisions over competing priorities, and proposes new solutions and tools to innovate and improve.
  • Promotion of mutual feedback in cross-functional groups, following SRE best practices within a DevOps culture.
  • A strong focus on service availability and proactive detection of problems.
  • Ability to articulate technical and business concepts to different audiences and be able to influence technical decisions with solid metrics collection and proof of concepts

Responsibilities:

  • Work with cross-functional teams to design and support delivery pipelines for projects living in cloud-based and on-premises environments.
  • Provide added value to cross-functional teams by raising awareness of operational constraints and opportunities (i.e., auto-scaling, containerization).
  • Ensure full coverage of the live environments from a monitoring, performance, and availability perspective, continuously identifying areas of improvement
  • Actively participate in team research & development to bring consistency and improve ease of access and maintenance for our tooling.
  • Work with a continuous improvement and forward-thinking mindset, identifying operational processes that could be improved and drafting proposals.
  • As a Senior member of the team, acts as a mentor for the group, constructively challenges service design and implementations, exhibits a high degree of autonomy in making a decision over competing priorities, and proposes new roadmap items to innovate and improve.

Qualifications

We list our preferred technologies, but if you have transferrable knowledge and are willing to learn what you do not know, we will consider your application.

Skill Requirements:

  • 10 years experience with SRE/DevOps
  • 5+ years experience with AWS cloud design and management, managing multiple accounts, Control Tower, SCPs, Policies, VPCs, etc.
  • BS degree in IT/IS/CS or additional equivalent work experience.
  • Have worked in an Agile environment supporting multiple software engineering teams for product releases, database and table creation, and monitoring/insight into issues.
  • A DevOps mindset; experience in agile processes (Kanban / Scrum) is important, and familiarity with Atlassian JIRA is very welcome.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation/Terraform) and a focus on automation.
  • Work independently as part of a cross-functional, global team.
  • Assist with routine system maintenance.
  • Participate in an on-call support rotation every few weeks.
