VMS is seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Sr. Staff Accountant to join our finance & operations team. The Sr. Staff Accountant supports VMS’s overall financial operations through recording of transactions for customer and vendor order to cash requirements, as well as analyzing and reconciling the monthly, quarterly and year end closing process.  This position will embrace the VMS culture in assessing new opportunities and developing innovative processes to perform the accounting responsibilities in a manner that drives operational efficiency and effectiveness.  The Sr. Staff Accountant will focus on Accounts Payable, and monthly accruals, and expense analysis.  Other areas of focus will be Revenue Recognition according to ASC606. The Sr. Staff Accountant will work in a matrix reporting structure, having responsibility to the VMS Business Unit as well as responsibility to Verisk Corporate Accounting. The ideal candidate will have experience working with key stakeholders across the organization, including People Operations, Sales, Marketing and Customer Success. 

About the Day to Day Responsibilities: 

Accounts Payable 

  • Review all invoices for appropriate documentation and approval prior to recording and payment processing 

  • Code invoices for proper documentation and recording in Verisk A/P System (Basware) 

  • Enter approved purchase requisitions into the PeopleSoft Requisition System. 

  • Maintain and update the Master Vendor list and files on a regular basis 

  • Correspond with vendors on a routine basis and resolve/respond to issues and inquiries 

  • Analyze and record VMS credit card bills on a routine basis 

General Accounting Duties 

  • Support the Verisk Corporate Accounting monthly, quarterly and year-end closing process as needed 

  • Routinely analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts to financial statement reporting 

  • Maintain files and documentation thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with Verisk company policy and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles   

Vendor Contracts 

  • Maintain central filing system of all vendor contracts to ensure that all vendor contract information is recorded, updated and current on master list and in support of required internal processes, including billing, budgeting and renewal process reminders 

  • Read vendor agreements and extract necessary information (Term, Termination, Renewal Terms, Start and End Dates, etc.) 

  • Run reports of monthly upcoming vendor renewals and coordinate internal resources for renewal decisions (Contracts, Functional Departments) 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting 

  • 3-5 years of experience in accounting 

  • Must have strong work ethic 

  • Detail oriented, professional attitude, and reliable 

  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and PeopleSoft Financials 

  • Possess strong organizational, analytical and time management skills 

  • Strong problem-solving skills, basic accounting principles knowledge, documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis and multi-tasking skills 

  • Knowledge of applicable accounts payable/general ledger systems and procedures, financial chart of accounts and corporate procedures 

  • Excellent written and communication skills 

  • Ability to interact with employees, vendors and customers in a professional manner 

  • Ability to work independently and with a team which includes various levels of management 

  • Ability to support multiple projects and meet deadlines 

Nice to Have 

  • Experience using Salesforce, Basware, and Netsuite 

  • Experience with Sales Commissions and CaptivateIQ 

  • Experience working in the Technology services industry
