The Global Head of Solar is responsible for setting our research agenda, driving high quality research and thought leadership, serving as the public face of Wood Mackenzie on solar industry issues, and driving our strategy in solar and our commercial success.  This includes identifying emerging themes that will impact customers and the industry and ensuring Wood Mackenzie is developing responsive research in its insight and data.  The Global Head of Solar is also responsible for influencing our product development and acquisitions strategy, identifying future growth opportunities, and contributing to consulting projects.

The Global Head of Solar will work closely with the thought leadership team in our Power & Renewables practice as well as the solar analysts embedded within each of our regional teams.

Main Responsibilities

  • Set the solar research agenda – identifying all emerging themes that will impact customers, helping progress the energy transition, and ensuring our datasets and written research are of high quality, help us achieve commercial success, and most importantly answer customers most pressing issues.
  • Take commercial ownership of our solar services, ensuring our research aligns with customer needs, we maintain and build new sources of competitive advantage, and we identify and pursue growth opportunities
  • Establish an industry presence as an influential speaker and thinker and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders in the solar and larger power industry
  • Develop thought provoking research that challenges conventional wisdom and generates new insights for industry participants
  • Serve as a thought leader in helping to develop our regional and global narratives that bring together our research across power market supply/demand economics, regulatory dynamics, technology drivers, and company strategies
  • Identify the datasets and sources of data necessary to support our underlying analysis and ensure we have proper quality control in developing those datasets
  • Support consulting engagements related to solar energy as needed

Qualifications

As our Global Head of Solar, you have already developed a reputation as an industry thought leader and have deep expertise on both the solar supply chain and the market dynamics and policies affecting the solar industry.  You have excellent verbal and written communication skills and can engage an audience and mentor your team members.

You have an analytical mindset and an eye for detail, which has been proven in your work experience to date, therefore you are comfortable taking complex, disparate ideas and distil them into simple, provocative concepts.

You are a natural self-starter who can work independently and generate the ideas you want to share by leveraging and expanding your industry network. You are comfortable disrupting your routine as you will be constantly looking to learn and provide in-depth analysis on industry trends and innovative market dynamics.

Finally, you are also effective at leading teams, mentoring the members of your team, and shaping them into future thought leaders and helping them grow in their careers.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • 10 plus years experience in the power industry, with at least five of that focused on renewable energy.  The ideal candidate will have a mix of experience in research or consulting focused roles, as well as hands on experience working at a renewable developer, a company in the solar industry supply chain, or a large buyer of power
  • Deep understanding of global solar industry trends, challenges, and opportunities and a good network of solar industry contacts

  • Prior experience successfully leading teams and helping grow your team members
  • A passion to make a difference in the way we power our planet and to help accelerate progress in decarbonizing our economies
