Job Description

We have an exciting new role opportunity for a Research Director to join our Global Bulks Assets team to drive the strategic direction of our research agenda in the steel and raw materials space. The individual will be the lead subject matter expert, joining a global team of well-established experts.  As part of the Metals and Mining Research Unit, the Bulks team is responsible for delivering comprehensive research coverage of global processing assets across the commodities we cover, including analysis of production, costs, processing parameters and operational risks. Wood Mackenzie’s high-quality Bulks research provides value to our clients, by providing a guide to the rapidly transitioning energy and natural resources sector and assisting clients in making the best commercial decisions to secure their business success.

Role Purpose

  • To significantly impact the strategic direction of steel and raw materials-related content within Wood Mackenzie with an emphasis on the energy transition journey.
  • To be an established and recognised industry expert (internally and by senior clients), fully conversant in the Global themes, events and business drivers that affect steel and its value chain.
  • To provide consistent and credible thought leadership in steel and its decarbonisation path, ensuring to be on top of key developments, technological advancements and emerging trends.
  • To significantly impact both internally and externally, promoting your understanding and opinions effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • To ensure that WoodMac’s published content reflects the highest standards of industry understanding and insight.
  • To maximise commercial opportunities for subscription services and WoodMac Consulting.
  • To be one of the go-to research partners for our Sales and Consulting teams, engaging with senior clients and prospects to support business retention and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and publishes with minimal support opinion-rich thought leadership content related to steel, raw materials and the energy transition path ahead. Has a thorough, forward-looking view of how, when and at which cost (capex and opex) H2 and CCUS technologies may be deployed as part of the steel ecosystem.
  • Quickly recognises and understands major trends as part of the green steel journey and readily engages with senior external and internal stakeholders.
  • Sets the agenda for priority themes in Research focusing on steel and raw materials but also the broader natural resources ecosystem.
  • Be recognised internally, and increasingly externally, as an authority on steel and its path to decarbonisation. Hugely inquisitive with a desire to seek out information to support theses. Comfortable challenging and being challenged and highly effective at adapting engagement style and tone to reflect counterparty approach.
  • Proven ability to see the high-level strategic picture. Exceptional ability to condense multifaceted issues into clear and concise messages. Ability to communicate at all levels, to challenge and be challenged. Comfortable with uncertainty and offering an opinion.
  • Routinely involved in dialogue with senior-level clients and regularly in demand for advice and commentary. Very good at building relationships both internally and externally.
  • Has an established media presence. Leverage Marketing to establish a personal profile on Woodmac.com and social media. Recognised as one of our leading presenters at conferences/forums.
  • Monitors the competitive environment to identify threats and opportunities and develops plans to address them. Establishes best practice frameworks.
  • Works with other Market SMEs within Wood Mackenzie to establish best practices and consistency.
  • Renowned coach and mentor to senior analysts.

Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and commercialising commodity-related research through roles in data analytics, consulting, corporate affairs, business development, financial appraisal and/or similar functions.
  • Work effectively in a highly collaborative environment, displaying sound subject matter knowledge of steel and its decarbonisation trajectory ahead.
  • A passion for making a difference in the way we power our planet and for helping accelerate progress in decarbonising our economies. You understand and is passionate about the role that steel will play in achieving this.
  • Strong content leadership skills to hone and maximise the value created by talents within the team.
  • You are passionate about what you do, and the quality of your work makes you credible with clients and able to engage at the senior level.
  • An intellectual curiosity and drive to explore and address the key challenges faced by our clients.
  • A service mindset and the ability to build relationships with senior decision-makers.
  • Your commercial acumen enables you to play a key role in defining our aspiration for our steel research. Given your engagement with your network of clients and contacts, you will understand their business and priorities and translate that into valuable insight and data.
  • Additional experience in consulting, with a sound knowledge of consulting processes is an advantage.
  • How you work enables you to build effective, collaborative internal relationships and influence across a matrix organisation. You understand that diversity of experience and thought makes a difference, and inclusion requires cultural appreciation.
