The Metals & Mining Assets Team

The Metals & Mining Assets team is responsible for Wood Mackenzie's global coverage of over 3,600 assets covering metals mining, bulks mining, and smelter & refining facilities. This asset-level analysis provides in-depth bottom-up coverage of mines and downstream facilities involved in the production of copper, gold, zinc, lead, aluminium, nickel, cobalt, lithium, coal, iron ore, and steel. This research feeds Wood Mackenzie’s industry-leading cost and carbon emissions products and services. As well as publishing reports and services, the team present our thought leadership and ideas through research notes, presentations, and face-to-face meetings with clients.

Job Description

We are looking for a Managing Consultant to join our team compiling our cost, emissions and ESG analysis for Battery Raw Material mine and refining facilities globally. You will be joining a large, global team of diverse, highly experienced, purpose-driven experts producing industry-leading insights on all things exciting about battery raw material supply. Within Metals & Mining we work with a range of clients including mining companies, investment banks, institutional investors, and industrial conglomerates, and our analysis supports these clients with their critical decision-making.

As a Managing Consultant, you will be required to:

  • Build and develop research and analytical expertise on the battery raw material supply chain.
  • Build and maintain contacts, and collate information from key industry participants virtually or in-person through asset visits or face-to-face meetings.
  • Engage regularly with clients, including senior executives, and respond to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Aid in the publication of our quarterly mine supply analysis reports and datasets.
  • Perform checks of integrity of analysis between asset level information gathered and available market information.
  • Author original opinion and thought leadership pieces around topical industry trends and events; such as mining industry decarbonisation and material supply supporting the global energy transition.
  • Help in the coaching, mentoring and development of junior members of staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • You have a degree in a relevant discipline such as Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining, Geology, Economics, Business or Finance.
  • You have a good understanding of the mining industry. Preferably gained from 4-8 years’ experience analysing commodities markets or mining/smelting/refining assets, through employment at either a resource company, metal processing company, consulting firm or in the financial sector.
  • Strong numeracy skills and an analytical approach.
  • An understanding of the needs and expectations of our clients, and the ability to meet them.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • The confidence and skills to present to industry participants at a range of levels and via various forms including calls, webcasts, podcasts, presentations and face-to-face meetings.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, achieving results and working effectively with colleagues.
  • Creative and innovative thinking; the ability to develop and contribute to new ideas
  • Good organisation and planning skills, with the ability to manage your own workload.
  • A commitment to excellence and meeting the standards which we pride ourselves on.
  • Experience in asset/company valuation techniques and excel modelling.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, specifically Excel.

 

Key Competencies

You are passionate about Metals and Mining and you are developing an in-depth understanding of the battery raw material supply chain. You have an analytical mindset and an eye for detail, which has been proven in your academic and work experience to date. Your experience includes working in a commercial research team, with experience in a cost discipline advantageous.

Your vision is to become a globally recognised battery raw material supply chain subject matter expert as part of a high-performing team.  You are curious, innovative, and passionate about commodity analysis, the global energy transition, and government policy’s impact on the metals supply chains.

You are experienced at collecting and interpreting data and are skilled at articulating your findings in a clear, concise, and insightful manner. You have a strong understanding of mining and procerssing cost drivers, complemented by flair for written and verbal communication with strong presentation skills. 

You demonstrate an ability to work independently and as part of a team, generating ideas you want to share. The way in which you work is productive and driven, striving to be best in class. 

You are looking for a role where you can build on your existing knowledge and learn from others in a collaborative, commercial and client-centric environment. You are comfortable sharing your industry knowledge with peers or junior colleagues.

You have a desire to continue to strengthen and broaden your existing relationships with mid-to-senior level client and industry contacts.  You have participated in supporting sales and marketing activities and have assisted in the on-going development of client relationships. You have co-operated with Consulting, Sales and Marketing teams in the Business Development process.
