Job Description

Join a growing Climate Change Team at Verisk Extreme Event Solutions in the Boston-based Research Department and contribute to the understanding of how climate change has been affecting various weather phenomena and will continue to do so in the future and the development of tools to help clients in the insurance, banking, and investment industries better prepare for the risk from climate change.

Research projects offers opportunities for creative fast-paced problem-solving on a boundless set of interesting problems at the interface of extreme weather, climate change, and risk.

We interact continuously with other meteorologists, applied mathematicians, climate scientists, engineers, and hydrologists in other departments and across other business units within Verisk.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret existing climate change output from CMIP5 and CMIP6 models
  • Evaluate climate change impacts on large scale circulations such as ENSO, PDO, etc.
  • Assess climate change impacts on extreme weather from historical data
  • Develop tools to help insurance industry quantify climate change risk
  • Help formulate answers to client questions related to climate change
  • Assist with drafting climate change documents

 

Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences
  • Two years minimum experience in working with CMIP model output
  • Fluency in at least one programming language (such as R, python, Matlab, fortran, C, C++, Java)
  • Fluency in Linux operating system
  • Excellent communication in both technical and non-technical contexts

 

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Background in data science/machine learning
  • Background in statistics: analyzing time series and distributions for statistically significant differences, quantifying uncertainty
  • Ability to work independently or with a team
