Job Description

Wood Mackenzie’s Energy Transition Practice provides integrated subscription, research and advisory services to inform and support our client’s commercial and strategic decisions in the complex and rapidly changing energy industry across all sectors of the economy.
Combining our deep knowledge of solar, wind, storage, and grid technologies, combined with our global power and fuels modeling and analytical capabilities, and emerging technologies like hydrogen and CCS, Wood Mackenzie can provide data and insight spanning the entire energy value chain. We cover supply chain, technology costs, policy and market issues, fundamentals-based outlooks, scenario modelling, price forecasting, asset valuation, and commodity market landscapes.
 

Team Profile

This role will serve as part of Wood Mackenzie’s Hydrogen team. The Hydrogen group sits within our emerging technologies group and focuses on the critical technologies enabling the energy transition. In this group we build cost models, interpret policies, build demand, supply and price analysis and deployment for each technology across our base case and scenarios. This is an excellent opportunity to join a strong. global team and make a major contribution to the energy transition at a global scale. Combining proprietary data with market simulation tools and models we help our clients understand market trends across each technology. Wood Mackenzie directly serves clients who are responsible for the success of their firms’ technology roadmap, competitive positioning, product marketing, and go-to market strategies.

Role Purpose

Working together with our Hydrogen team, our Data and Product team, the Principal Analyst – Hydrogen Assets will be responsible for owning and creating cash-flow models for individual low-carbon hydrogen projects. You’ll build fiscal terms for where hydrogen projects are looking to operate, understand pricing structures for revenue flow depending on product sold to each sector, provide cash-flow analyses underpinning each project, and, analyse qualitative drivers for the strengths and weaknesses of each project. You will work with our technology group to provide insight into the capex and opex drivers behind the technologies underpinning each low-carbon project. You will focus on supporting internal stakeholders as they translate intelligence on the hydrogen market to each of their business lines. You will integrate your analysis with the rest of the team deliverables including cost curve analysis for the hydrogen production value chain. You will integrate with midstream analyses to provide delivered cost of hydrogen to specific demand centres. You will contribute to bespoke consulting projects on hydrogen market activity. You will develop your own relationships with industry partners and establish a knowledge base to test your assumptions on project cost specifics. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Own and operate cash-flow analyses for individual low-carbon hydrogen projects. 
  • Produce regular deliverables on each project as we rotate through each low-carbon hydrogen project.
  • Create fiscal and subsidy terms relevant to each market where hydrogen projects operate or are planned.
  • Produce regular written reports and insights on the changing way the low-carbon hydrogen world is impacting the Energy Transition.
  • Present findings in market reports, industry insight pieces and in person via conference calls, webinars and conferences. 
  • Build a strong relationship with industry stakeholders in the hydrogen space. Engage with project developers through frequent conversations on how we are modelling how hydrogen costs are changing, understand their perspectives, and how that may influence our modelling.
  • Strengthen the data apparatus through surveys, interviews, and secondary research. Refresh the analytical models with updated data on a regular basis.
  • Provide high-quality client service to research subscribers through responding to inquiries, one-on-one conversations, and special events.
  • Collaborate with SMEs and internal stakeholders across Wood Mackenzie to support the creation of our content.
     

Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience

  •  Advanced Excel, deep knowledge of financial modelling of energy related assets; statistical and modelling packages a plus.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in hydrogen or hydrogen-adjacent industries. Passionate about the renewable industry and energy transition.
  • Strong familiarity with policy landscape as it impacts the energy transition.
  • Familiar with energy demand, technology adoption and technology cost modelling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions.
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator.
  • Strong communication skills. Comfortable interacting with clients and industry stakeholders. 
  • An engaging nature, capable of connecting with co-workers, clients and industry stakeholders in a wide range of professional settings.
  • A deep intellectual curiosity about the impact of a wider business landscape.
