Job Description

This role will serve as part of Wood Mackenzie’s Energy Transition Practice, with a focus on renewable supply chain, systems and technology. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing team and make a major contribution to the energy transition at a global scale. Our supply chain and technology team provides market intelligence and analysis to asset owners, developers, OEMs of turbine and solar modules, Independent Service Providers and renewable industry professionals regarding the changing landscape of the global renewables supply chain, solar and wind systems and technology markets. This research encompasses market assessments, component and system cost benchmarking and forecasting, strategy identification, supply chain support and competitive analysis.
Role Purpose
You will be responsible for research and analysis in our growing Wind and Solar research practice, serving as a subject matter expert on supply chain, systems and technology.
 
You will conduct original quantitative and qualitative market research and deliver analysis through written reports, consulting, client inquiries, and speaking engagements. As a part of Wood Mackenzie’s wind and solar research teams, you will serve clients who are responsible for the success of their firm’s supply chain strategies, competitive market positioning, system cost modelling, technology roadmaps and deployment strategies.

Main Responsibilities

Research, Analysis and Report writing: 

  • Conduct primary and secondary research on global wind supply chain and solar system price trends, technologies, business models, market developments and financial impacts.
  • Lead and contribute to the research publications including but not limited to: Wind Turbine Technology Trends, Wind Turbine Supply Chain Trends, Wind Turbine OEMs Market Shares, Solar system price forecasts, Emerging solar applications, Global Next-Generation Wind Turbine Models.
  • Ensure all deliverables are executed and delivered in a timely fashion to a high standard

Data Analysis

  • Monitor and maintain relevant data for the supply and technology segments, including costs, technology trends, supply chain and the competitive landscape.
  • Develop, update and maintain wind supply chain databases, technology databases, 
  • Develop supply chain costing models and deduce the capex for wind and solar assets.
  • Continue to improve the existing solar system cost model and produce long-term forecasts.
  • Ensure the data quality and accuracy is continuously improved  

Networking and Industry collaboration  

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders in the industry and clients. 
  • Establish an industry presence as an influential speaker and thinker; build relationships with senior industry professionals – solar and wind project developers and EPCs, turbine OEMs, component suppliers and raw material suppliers as well as with the journalists who cover the sector; and participate in vendor briefings and press inquiries as necessary

Consulting engagement

  • Support and lead specific consulting assignments on supply chain and technology 

Business Development

  • Work directly with sales and marketing via internal and external communications to actively help generate new sales, build larger programs for existing clients, and effectively market completed research.
  • Present at WoodMac and industry-sponsored events, and moderate client webinars

Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience
You come with experience from a wind, solar or other renewable company and have a deep understanding of renewable energy technologies, with knowledge in the following areas:

  • Turbine OEMs supply chain strategies
  • Component and raw material suppliers 
  • Competitive differentiators for supply chain companies
  • Global and Regional Wind / solar market dynamics
  • Drivers and barriers to various innovative supply chain models
  • The emerging role of digitalization

You have knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas: 

  • Wind turbine technology including the manufacturing, reliability and technology differentiators of blades, major powertrain components, towers, bearings, turbine controls etc.
  • Solar power systems and major cost components including solar modules, inverters, trackers and BOS systems, design evolution of a solar power plant, major cost drivers and trends and a general understanding of emerging solar applications such as floating solar, building integrated solar etc. 

You have excellent analytical skills and an eye for detail including knowledge of base engineering calculations such as AEP (Annual Energy Production), input torque, power coefficients, tip speed etc. experience of IRR modelling, market size modelling, system cost and price modelling and revenue & profibiliaty forecasting will also be beneficial. 

You’re commercially aware,  have strong excel skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills
