Job Description

The A Player Data Analyst is the following: 

  • Detail oriented: The successful Data Analyst audits large quantities of data and identifies potential issues.  

  • Technically skilled: This person has a working knowledge of relational databases. They are comfortable in MySQL and able to pick up new concepts quickly. 

  • Collaborator: The Data Analyst works well in a team environment. They lean on fellow employees and internal resources to assist them with their duties.   

  • Task owner: This person takes responsibility for each task that they work on. They have a personal interest in the data and claim responsibility for the outcome.  

  • Clear and concise communicator: The successful Data Analyst keeps exceptional notes and is able to communicate their thoughts to others in an intelligible manner.  

The A Player Data Analyst does the following: 

  • Normalize building permit data: Receive data in a variety of different formats and use internal applications to clean and normalize data. Use regular expressions to manipulate poorly formatted data. Ensure that BuildFax data is consistent across the board. 

  • Audit building permit data: Verify that data meets specific quality requirements. Utilize knowledge of MySQL and databases to identify errors in the source data or in processing. 

  • Communicate with team members: When data does not meet requirements, make clear recommendations on what needs to be fixed. Efficiently relay findings to co-workers. 

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify steps in the process that could be improved. Share ideas with team members and management in a continuous effort to optimize our performance.

Experience and Skills 

The candidate should possess a well-rounded background, which may have been acquired through prior job experience, coursework, or personal projects, with as many of the specific qualifications as possible: 

  • Proficient in database use and data preparation skills.   
  • Experience querying a MySQL database preferred.   
  • Experience using regular expressions to manipulate data a plus. 
  • Experience working with several different types of file formats. 
  • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical staff members.  
  • Must follow projects through to completion from receipt of data to go-live.  
  • Great problem-solving skills and ability to coordinate the resources needed to overcome IT challenges during operation. 

Other Qualifications  

  • Education: 4 years of a college degree or similar  
  • Full-Time Employment: Ability to work as a full-time employee  
  • Work Environment: Ability to work from our Asheville, NC office
