Wood Mackenzie Power and Renewables provides a one-stop integrated subscription, analysis and advisory service for companies in the energy and related sectors, enabling our clients to make the best decisions within a constantly evolving global energy industry.

Our cutting-edge knowledge of solar, wind and energy storage supply chains, technology, and investment trends, added to in-depth modelling and coverage of traditional fuels and assets, gives Wood Mackenzie a unique advantage to offer best-in-class market forecasting and insights. 

We have a dynamic and expanding team in Asia Pacific, which is already the largest regional power market in the world. The region is expected to contribute two thirds of future electricity demand growth and play a leading role in deployment of renewable energy. 

We are looking for a Power Data Associate to join the Asia Pacific Power team.  This is an entry-level role and does not require specific work experience. The successful candidate will be carry out data, modelling and market research tasks and over time gain detailed knowledge of a wide range of power technologies across China and Asia Pacific regional markets.

The associate will have excellent opportunities to develop skills and expertise including building on Wood Mackenzie’s industry-leading research and proprietary datasets and research services including learning to operate and run power dispatch modelling software.  This analytical role is based in Beijing.   

The daily work for this role will include updating and maintaining Asia Pacific power data such as power demand, power plants, transmission lines, capacity/generation, power prices, investment trends, and power market regulations. You will have opportunity to work with a global team of experts in the solar, wind, battery storage, power modeling, gas and coal markets as needed to support our clients.  You will develop deep understanding of Asia Pacific energy market dynamics, being able to effectively discuss recent events and implications with clients and colleagues. 

With guidance and reasonable editorial inputs from your manager and senior colleagues, you will quickly become a contributor to or independently prepare high-quality, insightful written reports, publications and presentations to influence clients’ business decisions.   Over time you will build and maintain relationships with a range of clients and other experts in the power & renewables industry.   You will also at times support the successful execution of consulting projects by working closely with Power and Renewables Consulting team.

Through research trips, client interactions and industry events you will pro-actively build your network to improve understanding the key topics and challenges facing the industry.  You will address these in your contributions to our modelling and deliverables.

The role is ideal for a recent graduate who is interested in launching a career in the power and renewables industry and building experience towards becoming a recognized power sector expert. The successful candidate is expected to have the following qualifications, experience and qualities:  

  • Strong quantitative skills and interest and aptitude to learn about power markets and modelling
  • Experience and/or interest in power markets. This is an entry-level role but internships and 0-2 years of work experience in an analytical role in the energy industry are a plus.
  • Enthusiasm, curiosity, willingness to work hard and expand knowledge and skills, and the ability to tackle challenging questions and rethink conventional wisdom
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering, science, computer science, or economics; graduate degree preferred
  • Relevant experience in data management: working knowledge of Python programming and SQL databases is a major plus.
  • Strong organisation, planning and time management skills to work to deadlines
  • Proactive and accountable
  • Effective writing and presentation skills
  • The ability to work as part of a team across multiple locations
  • Commitment to excellence and growth through role modelling
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; fluency in an Asian language is a plus
