Job Description

Become a member of our Meteorology Team and join our growing Research and Modeling Department. As a member of mid-latitude/extratropical perils team, you will be responsible for developing efficient and statistically robust extratropical cyclone and winter storm models, implement – together with other scientists in the team – innovative solutions in weather and climate simulations and support client facing teams in extreme weather phenomena issues.


About the day-to-day responsibilities of the role:


•    Develop, code, and enhance stochastic and physically based models for regions across the globe for extratropical cyclones (ETCs) and winter storms. 
•    Collect, process, and analyze all available data to support the ETC and winter storms simulation and validation processes
•    Be comfortable operating in real and near-real time to obtain the best possible representation of an actual meteorological event on tight deadlines
•    Run models and fuse/assimilate observations into the modeling process to bring model output close to reality
•    Present AIR ETC and winter storm models internally and externally to clients and government bodies 
 

Qualifications

•    Solid background in midlatitude meteorology and climate science with emphasis on ETC and winter storms. Expertise in numerical weather and climate simulations will be considered a plus.
•    Knowledge of probability theory and (geo)statistics. Experience with statistical analysis, data science, data assimilation and stochastic simulation applications in meteorology would be considered a significant advantage. 
•    Strong programming skills gained through practical experience using high-level language and tools such as R, Python, C++, MATLAB, or FORTRAN. Experience with collaborative code development and system scripting and familiarity with version control will be considered a plus.
•    Ability to gather, integrate, and critically analyze data from all relevant sources of natural hazard information such as national and international agencies, insurance data, private entities
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•    Ability to achieve goals and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks. Project management experience would be considered a plus. 
•    Highly motivated and self-directed in advancing complex projects

Requirements:


The things you absolutely need to have:
•    Advanced degree in meteorology, climate science or related field with associated experience related to midlatitude weather analysis and simulation. Ph. D. preferred, but strong M.S. applicants may also be considered.
