Job Description

We are looking for a Managing Consultant (China copper raw materials and costs) to join our Copper Research Team. This role will be based in China (Beijing or Shanghai) working in a global team of experts located in Singapore, the UK and Peru.  As part of the Metals and Mining Research Unit, the Copper Markets and Costs (Mine, Smelter and Refinery) Team are responsible for delivering comprehensive research coverage on the global copper outlook for supply, demand and costs.  

About the role

As part of a world-class team of industry experts, you will quickly become adept at enhancing our research and market intelligence on the supply of copper concentrate, spot TCRCs, and mine, smelter and refinery costs.  You will closely monitor and assess key developments in the copper industry with a focus on the drivers of China’s copper raw material requirements (concentrate, scrap and metal).  You will work in a small team that will take advantage of your knowledge of the sphere of copper supply but will challenge you to be involved in all aspects of the copper market. You will need to be efficient and self-motivated as well as being able to work well within the team and with other commodity groups. You will efficiently develop research data and also develop opinions and draw out conclusions from that data.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide monthly copper concentrate market analysis to the markets team for the short-term outlook which includes compiling, manipulating and evaluating data from different sources
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of copper smelters and refineries in China (and a good knowledge of plants globally) for the answering of customer queries and contributing to the copper long-term term supply forecast
  • Reconciling supply and costs data from a variety of sources and incorporating this into Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary systems
  • Updating smelter and refinery cost profiles including the collection, storage and analysis of data. Update written profiles that are published quarterly. These would include China and potentially other parts of Asia such as Japan and South Korea. A high level of industry knowledge is expected and attention to detail is required
  • Oversee building of the smelter and refinery cost model each quarter
  • Write insights or ad hoc research reports
  • Contribute to mine cost research for assets in China
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with industry stakeholders to exchange views.
  • Present to customers and at conferences, which may entail travel within China and around the world

You will work effectively with and have the opportunity to learn from senior experts and the wider metals and mining team to deliver content and commercial agendas in line with product strategy.  This will be used to produce high-quality research in the form of industry-defining data, thought-provoking written analysis and presentations.

Through your research and responding to customer queries, you will strengthen your network of contacts at key companies and bodies. Your contribution to our industry-leading written reports, economic models and presentations will be valued. You will get the opportunity to travel.  

You will also work collaboratively across the other Woodmac regions within the metals and mining research team on a regular basis to create a holistic view of the sector.  You will also coordinate with our Consulting team to support their work.

Qualifications

About you and how you can excel in this role

You are passionate about metals and mining, and you are developing an in-depth understanding of the sector. You have an analytical mindset and an eye for detail, which has been proven in your academic and work experience to date. Ideally you will have a degree and/or post graduate studies in Mining/ Geology/ Metallurgical Engineering or Economics/ Business. Your experience includes working in a commercial research team, ideally in a metals and/or mining discipline.

You are comfortable collecting and interpreting data, articulating your findings in a clear and insightful manner. This is particularly relevant when articulating your understanding of the dynamics of copper supply and costs with related drivers.  You also have a flair for writing and communication with strong presentation skills. 

Your long-term aspiration is to be an influential subject matter expert setting the industry agenda. You are looking for a role where you can build on your existing knowledge and learn from others in a collaborative, commercial and client-centric environment. You also enjoy sharing what you have learnt with others.
