As part of this work you will interact and collaborate with several partners and stakeholders in government, academia, and industry.

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Assist STAR staff in assessing and testing new emerging technologies, numerical techniques, and next generation observing systems.
  • Explore the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to efficiently perform satellite remote sensing, radiative transfer modeling, surface emissivity modeling, data assimilation, and data fusion.
  • Assess the potential impacts of products from existing and future satellite observing systems on NOAA’s environmental numerical model prediction and analysis systems.
  • Extend the capabilities of different components of the data assimilation system including the radiative transfer models, data assimilation algorithms for current and new sensors, data fusion techniques, and remote sensing algorithms.
  • Provide technical and scientific support to satellite technology maturation projects by exploiting new sensors, adopting new techniques that have not been proven yet, and helping design new space constellations.
  • Provide scientific analyses of proposed satellite constellation and sensor concepts to support the STAR-led Sensors performances Assessment Team (SAT).
  • Prepare regular progress reports and contribute to scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Prepare and give presentations at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

About You and How You Can Excel in This Role

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in radiative transfer, remote sensing, and/or data assimilation.
  • Advanced degrees (masters and/or doctorate) preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of advanced data assimilation, remote sensing, and/or radiative transfer techniques. Experience with the application of AI/ML approaches to these tasks is a plus.
  • Able to work on moderately complex scientific projects independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • High degree of technical skill with scientific programming in multiple computer languages.
