Job Description

The ISO unit of Verisk is looking for Insurance Data Analysts to support our large team of actuaries and data analytics experts, who create innovative analytic products based on our unique database of over 21 billion records spanning more than twenty lines of insurance.   

You will play a hands-on role in creating a wide variety of ISO’s analytic solutions including: our advisory prospective loss costs and rating factors; analyses that underlie the development of our loss costs (such as distributions by peril, classification or geographic area); actuarial projection of ultimate claims, and analysis of trends impacting premiums and claims; analytical data management, including smart data quality analytics,  data aggregations provided to US state insurance regulators and analytic research & development. 

A successful Insurance Data Analyst will possess excellent technical and mathematical skills, to manipulate data and derive analyses.  Most important, though, is a sense of inquisitiveness about data, and the ability not just to find patterns in data, but to also understand what they mean. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Create, modify and execute computer programs to extract, transform and summarize data, as input to derive analyses and reports.  
  • Review the quality of data provided by insurance companies, both in transactional detail and in aggregate, and help companies to correct errors. 
  • Understand and take ownership of our business processes, and recommend improvements in data management, error identification, quality control, process automation, or analytic techniques. 
  • Support strategic initiatives associated to cloud computing, by helping to migrate code, data and processes, and reconciling results against existing procedures.  
  • Create clear and easy to understand reports. Present your analyses, ideas, progress and results to internal manager and colleagues.  Communicate effectively with customers and insurance regulators. 
  • Support a high-performance collaborative culture.  Participate in peer-review with colleagues on an ongoing basis to learn, teach, and ultimately, produce high quality results. 
  • Understand: 
    • The structure of insurance datasets  
    • The US P&C insurance business including coverages, components of rating variables, etc. 
    • Basic actuarial concepts. 
  • Develop knowledge of Verisk Analytics’ business practices, products, and data sources.  
  • Remain current on big data techniques and become familiar with state-of-the-art tools.  
  • Contribute to the creation of detailed project plans to ensure projects are completed on time. 

Qualifications

  • Graduate or Bachelor's degree with a major in Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Risk Management, Operational Research or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Fluency in English is required. 
  • Practical experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis, using tools such as SQL, Python, R or SAS.  
  • Technical background should include a working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint) and understanding of computer programming concepts. 
  • Other advantageous experience: 
  • Experience with large (>100,000 row) datasets or datasets of mixed quality. 
  • Data visualization software such as Tableau, Spotfire or COGNOS. 
  • Familiarity with Property-Casualty Insurance coverages, data, and/or actuarial methodologies. 
  • Using VBA to automate tasks in Microsoft Office.  
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, listening and teamwork skills, and effective summarization skills.  
  • Detail-oriented technical aptitude with strong logical, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent organization/planning skills and talent for managing many large and complex datasets. 
  • Aptitude in performing multiple tasks and dealing with changing deadline requirements. This includes knowing when to escalate issues. Maintains a focused, flexible, organized, and proactive manner. 
  • Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
