SUMMARY: 
As the leader of PowerAdvocate’s Data Science team, the Data Science Director manages a team and rolls up their sleeves to actively participate in all aspects of the algorithm testing and development process—from data extraction and wrangling, through effective database integration solutions to model development and implementation.  The Director contributes as part of an Agile team, in a fast-paced environment with high visibility to the rest of the company. He or she also participates in broader aspects of each project including communicating ongoing results and outcomes via effective visualizations and other presentation tools, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the results produced and their applicability to our internal customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to the following, other duties may be assigned to meet business needs:
•Lead a team of data scientists (currently 6) including hiring, training, developing, and coaching; managing performance and career development
•Effectively communicate across teams at all levels of organization including parent company Verisk
•Provide oversight and guidance as needed, sometimes rolling up their sleeves to do the work, that includes:
oExtract, clean, audit and prepare data for analysis, relying on well-structured procedures and maintaining reproducibility of results
oDesign experiments to answer targeted questions and conduct exploratory data analysis 
oAnalyze and judge the quality of data produced and proactively develop and implement solutions to data quality issues
oPresent and visualize interim and final results of analyses
oImplement and test algorithms and techniques relevant to achieving project objectives
oMaintain and develop, as needed, ETL pipelines and databases relevant to analytic solutions being developed
oInterface with primary team members to construct, maintain, and automate client-related data to support other analyst teams in the Spend Intelligence Group
•Translate business objectives into actionable analysis
•Manage a full data science stack: development, deployment, validation, management 
•Provide insight into the development of new customer products and internal uses for PowerAdvocate’s vast database of information
 

Qualifications

KEY COMPETENCIES:
•Experience guiding  teams through effective approaches to data extraction, data auditing, and exploratory data analyses
•Develops clear workflow / implementation plans based on chosen approaches
•Has a sharp eye for detail coupled with capacity for planning, organizing and analyzing large-scale complex data projects
•Demonstrates solid interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with a diverse team to deliver superior results in an Agile development environment
•Maintains working relationships across both technology and product groups
•Communicates findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
•Demonstrates the ability to shift between academically rigorous approaches and pragmatic quick-and-dirty-yet-useful tools for the real world
•Is open-minded about new approaches and tools for achieving the goals of our customers

TECHNICAL SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
•10+ years of relevant experience in Data Science, Statistics, Econometrics or Machine Learning projects
•High proficiency in a range of statistical / modeling tools, including time-series forecasting
•Wizard at data extraction, loading, and transformation pipelines 
•Solid programming skills in at least one object-oriented language (Python, Java, or C++)
•Familiarity with relational databases and advanced knowledge of SQL
•Experience with data visualization tools including, Matplotlib and Plotly 
•Experience working distributed data tool such as, Airflow and Spark
•Experience with Flask or related frameworks a plus
•B.S./M.S. in a quantitative discipline: Econometrics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering
