Job Description

Verisk is looking for a Data Scientist/Engineer Team Lead to support high visibility, high priority, big data projects that have significant revenue potential.   

As a Data Scientist/Engineer Team Lead, you will play an integral role by applying data cleaning, merging, and feature engineering techniques, to transform large, very complex data (of varying quality) into highly usable, model-ready datasets.   You will be tasked with synthesizing creative solutions to non-trivial problems such as creating complex matching algorithms to join disparate data sources, backfilling missing data, engineering high-quality features, identifying computational inefficiencies, and resolving them with current-generation big data techniques.   

This role will support senior data scientists, who will use these modeling datasets to generate underwriting and rating products across personal, commercial, property, and auto insurance lines of business.  Most of your work will revolve around utilizing SQL (SparkSQL, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL) and packages such as Pandas/Dask, NumPy, Numba, and h2o.   

Responsibilities  

  • Supervise the execution of data analysis and modeling projects, including project/sample design, reception, and processing of data; performing analyses and modeling; creation of final reports/presentations, communication of results and sales support. 

  • Utilize advanced statistical techniques and state-of-the-art big data tools to create high-performing predictive models and creative analyses, that are in compliance with regulatory and privacy requirements, to address business objectives and client needs. 

  • Test new statistical analysis methods, software and data sources for continual improvement of quantitative solutions. Share knowledge within the analytics group. 

  • Create clear and easy to understand reports and/or PowerPoint decks for client meetings or third-party collaborations. Verbally present analyses, ideas, progress and results to internal managers, external partners and customers. 

  • Communicate with internal groups on data specifications and with IT engineers on model/algorithm implementation. 

  • Contribute to the creation of detailed project plans to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. Provides high-quality ongoing customer/partner support; answering questions, resolving problems and building solutions. 

  • Exhibit creativity in an active problem-solving environment. 

  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of: 

    • The structure of insurance datasets 

    • The Property & Casualty insurance business, including coverages, components of rating variables, etc.  

    • Basic actuarial concepts

    • Verisk Analytics’ business practices, products, and data sources. 

Qualifications

  • 4-8 years experience, and Masters or PhD in the field of: Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Risk Management, Computation Biology, Operational Research or related discipline. 

  • At least 2 years of Project Leadership and at least 1 year of People Leadership. 

  • Substantial programming experience, including Python or R (at least 4 years), and SQL (at least 2 years). 

  • Distributed computing experience a plus. AWS experience additionally valuable. 

  • Fluency in English is required. 

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, listening and teamwork skills, and effective summarization skills. 

  • Detail-oriented technical aptitude with strong logical, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent organization/planning skills and talent for managing many large and complex datasets. 

  • Aptitude in performing multiple tasks and dealing with changing deadline requirements. This includes knowing when to escalate issues. Maintain a focused, flexible, organized, and proactive manner. 

  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems a plus. 

  • Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
