Job Description

The main responsibility is to perform research to assist or lead the development and update of AIR’s catastrophe models. The primary focus of the research is to study the vulnerability of various properties (such as building, infrastructure, large industrial facility, etc.) and the associated insurance metrics. The candidate will work closely with a team of structural engineers, seismologists, software professionals, data analysts, and actuaries to incorporate the latest science and technologies into probabilistic risk assessment for earthquakes, fires following earthquakes, tsunami, wildfire, and other perils. 

Main Responsibilities:


•    Set up, calibrate, and run AIR’s catastrophe models (primarily earthquake and wildfire)
•    Develop computer programs to automate data capture and processing of model results, client data, exposure data, etc.
•    Summarize and present findings in structured ways utilizing both verbal and visualized measures
•    Perform analytical research to address challenges of catastrophe modeling and meet clients’ needs.
 

Qualifications

Qualifications, desired knowledge, skills and abilities:


•    Proficient in programming using R, Python, C++, FORTRAN, or MATLAB
•    Proficient in GIS operations, especially automated production of datasets in shapefile, raster, and file geodatabase format.
•    Demonstrated data analysis skills using R or Python
•    Familiar with general operations in ArcMap, ArcPro, or QGIS
•    Experience in probabilistic risk assessment and modeling, particularly in the field of engineering

Requirements:

  • PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree with associated professional experience
  • Earthquake or Atmospheric engineering background is preferable
