Job Description

AIR Worldwide (AIR), a member of the Verisk Insurance Solutions group at Verisk Analytics, is the scientific leader and most respected provider of risk modeling software and consulting services. AIR founded the catastrophe modeling industry in 1987 and today models the risk from natural catastrophes, terrorism, cyber-attacks, and pandemic outbreaks in 90 countries. AIR offers the opportunity to work with advanced technologies, global clients, and hundreds of the most innovative, talented minds in the industry.

As a research engineer, the nature of the work could vary from time to time, but the primary responsibility will focus on studying and modeling property damage, human injury and cost of cleaning caused by a diverse range of possible terrorist attacks including conventional blast, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons in the context of insurance application, through literature reviews and simulations of various weapon effects using creditable tools, and explaining model results to non-technical audience. The candidate will work closely with a team of specialists to perform probabilistic risk assessment, and strong verbal communication is required.

A successful candidate should have strong technical background in science, engineering or mathematics, has a desire to solve challenging problems and grow expertise in new areas, and is expected to be a highly motivated, detail oriented, well organized, self-directed, and an excellent team player.

 Responsibilities (main responsibilities, but not limited to):

    • Develop damage functions and monetary loss curves for a variety of assets subjected to blast, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapon attack
    • Synthesize results from independent research into AIR’s Terrorism models
    • Use independently collected data to assess, validate, and QA model performance
    • Provide technical support for AIR’s Terrorism models to staff and clients
    • Author technical writing for internal and external publications

Qualifications (desired knowledge, skills and abilities):

    • State-of-the-art knowledge how the impact of various weapon types on properties and human propagates in built environment
    • Experience with GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
    • Proficiency in programming (preferably C++) and data mining skills (SQL and/or other statistical analysis software such as R)
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong data organization and documentation skills
    • Experience of DoD modeling and simulation tools such as HPAC is a plus

Requirements:

    • MS or PhD in science, engineering or mathematics
