Company Description

We are looking for a Research Director to lead our Grid Edge research team in at Wood Mackenzie.  Our dedicated grid edge team delivers research and consulting projects based on our deep sectoral knowledge of the electric utility industry and the disruptions underway by the wide proliferation of distributed generation, energy storage, energy management solutions, microgrids, and other customer-sited technologies. Together we work with a range of clients including utilities, technology companies, project developers, investment banks and institutional investors.

Location: New York but Boston or Houston would also be considered.

The Grid Edge team is a crucial and growing part of the Energy Transition practice at Wood Mackenzie.  We provide detailed data, analysis, and insight across global power markets, solar, wind, storage, electric vehicles and emerging technologies.

Job Description

You will lead a team of analysts and subject matter experts that provide comprehensive and thought-provoking research on the grid edge markets worldwide. You will be adept at integrating a wide array of research charting the impact of the deployment of distributed energy resources and evolution of public policy on power markets, distribution infrastructure, and utility business model threats and opportunities. You will also form opinions on corporate strategies, the business environment, M&A deals, market and system economics, and government energy policy.

A key part of your role is to develop relationships with the grid edge community, which runs the gamut from electric utilities and transmission system operators, regulators, technology vendors, developers, national R&D labs, and the financial community. These strong relationships will enable you to gather intelligence that will enrich the quality and timeliness of our research solutions.  You will also become a go-to-expert for clients and media. You will work closely with our sales and consulting colleagues to support evolving client needs. This will involve regularly travel into the region to share and present data and inform views on the grid edge transition underway today and demonstrating how our insight and solutions help clients make better decisions.

You will be able to prioritize what matters to clients and the team, having regular interaction with senior business stakeholders. Your focus will be to champion change, fostering an open, innovative and dynamic team environment. You will ensure that we embrace new technologies and techniques to improve data processes and workflow. You will also work with client management and consulting to generate new research, sales and consulting opportunities.

You have an analytical, commercial mindset and an eye for detail. You also understand the big picture, which enables you to analyze and form clear, coherent conclusions from a variety of data and information. You thrive in a collaborative, commercial and client-centric environment. 

You have a proven track record of fostering strong working relationships including coaching, influencing and developing others around you. Delivering quality is your key driver and this is embedded in your team, making you credible with colleagues and clients. You possess the following core competencies:

  • 8+ years relevant work experience in the electric utility, public policy, or grid edge technology markets
  • Prior experience with energy project economics, financial valuation and commercial modelling
  • Structured thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and develop relationships with people at all levels in an organization
