Job Description

This intern is expected to work 40 hours/ week beginning January 2020 (the internship is expected to last 4-6 months). The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate or someone eligible for a co-op through their school. This is a paid internship.

The intern will be placed in our Verisk Weather Solutions business unit. Verisk Weather Solutions is redefining how businesses understand and manage risk from weather and the environment. Our products include geospatial weather data and associated databases to allow our customers, which consist of US and Canadian insurance companies and related service providers, to quickly identify exposure to natural hazards and manage weather-related claims.

 Job Description:

The Weather Solutions Support Analyst will contribute to the company by completing varying tasks and projects related to the insurance claims suite of products. Examples of these functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily Weather Analysis: Track severe weather events and compile discussions that feed into claims products. The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded knowledge of synoptic meteorology.
  • GIS: Create maps, shapefiles, and relevant GIS layer content for ad-hoc requests and catastrophic weather events. This will also involve the execution of simple command-line scripts. Experience working with Google Earth and GIS programs, such as ESRI ArcGIS or QGIS are a plus.
  • Data Analysis: Support product management and software engineer teams by writing Python scripts to analyze insurance claims and weather peril data.
  • Marketing Content: Assist product and marketing teams in writing blogs and other marketing content related to severe weather events and their impact to the insurance industry.  
  • Additional special projects as needed (support product management, software engineers, and marketing in additional areas pertaining to weather solutions claims products.)

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or candidate for degree in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology
  • Analytical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Detail-oriented
  • Aptitude for analyzing and discussing weather events, from both a forecast and post-event perspective
  • Computer programming skills, preferred in languages such as Python and R
  • Ability to work 40 hours/ week beginning January 2020, for 4-6 months
