Job Description

We are looking for a full-time Research Manager to join Wood Mackenzie’s Power and Renewables (P&R) team in Houston, Texas, United States. The P&R team’s research spans power market fundamentals and price forecasting, to asset valuation and strategy that comprises some of the most highly utilized data, reports and insights across Wood Mackenzie. Our broad industry knowledge and deep insight into the North American power market is unparalleled and helps our clients’ position for success during the energy transition.

The Research Manager will have a strong background in power market analytics as well as experience in both team and commercial management of a product. The candidate has the ambition to manage an analyst team of subject matter experts to maintain quality and improve depth while staying on deadline. As commercial manager of the North America Power service, the candidate will liaise with internal stakeholders, including sales and marketing, to drive new business.

About the role

The manager of our North American Power Service will lead a group of highly respected market experts and contribute to the delivery of industry-leading short- and long-term power outlooks based on analysis of the dynamics impacting the North America power and renewables sector. The successful candidate will also lead the commercial activities of the product, working directly with sales and marketing team to drive revenue growth of the product.

In this role, you will manage the operations of the North American Power service product from content and messaging alignment across the team and broader Woodmac group to line management of teammates. You are responsible for establishing best practices, meeting deadlines, and ensuring that the team and service have the resources and infrastructure necessary to evolve with the ever-changing market landscape. You will develop a collaborative team focused on quality, creativity, and a strong commercial focus.

Commercial Product Management: 

  • Develop close relationships with clients to understand their needs and how products fit into their workflows.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of product revenues and usage for the product, including who our key clients are, and major client renewal dates.
  • Build an integrated value proposition across the product and help develop marketing collateral that clearly communicates those messages to internal and external stakeholders
  • Point of contact across organization on commercial process requests - Own marketing messaging & collateral

Research Management & Operations

  • Collaborate with regional peers, global subject matter experts, and other WoodMac commodity analytics team to develop and implement an integrated power market outlook
  • Ensure the content and product roadmap, as well as the analytical and modelling best practices established by the subject matter experts are followed within region
  • Ensure that research produced in region is completed on time, and meets our quality expectations, while ensuring alignment of regional views across the commodity sectors.

Team Management & Individual Development

  • Lead, motivate and inspire employees across the P&R research team to deliver integrated analysis and products that are both world class and commercially successful.
  • Promote the continual development of professionals across the team, ensuring potential maximization, and effective succession planning.
  • Actively mentor, coach and support commodity area leaders; be a role model for all aspects. of people management.
  • Identify and develop regional content leadership and line management talent.

Your work experience in fundamental power market research and consulting proves you hold these characteristics and are comfortable taking complex, disparate ideas and distilling them into simple, provocative concepts.

You have experience leading a productive team, effectively motivating and mentoring teammates to achieve positive results. You are adept at team resource management, particularly in terms of coordinating and negotiating within a larger internal group.

  • Commercially focused - Innovative product and solutions development
  • Have a highly commercial frame of mind with experience interacting with clients
  • Dynamic personality and an ability to multi-task - Work well under tight deadlines
  • Team player with a track record of managing successful team projects
  • Ability to inspire and develop colleagues individually and in terms of a common goal
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience in the power sector
  • Strong experience doing fundamental power market analysis using dispatch models (Aurora, MIDAS, Plexos, PROMOD, etc)
  • Experience managing a team of analysts
  • Quantitative background and degree (e.g., economics, finance, engineering)
