Job Description

We are looking for a Global Head of Research Data to lead our Upstream & Corporate teams.  The team is a critical element in Wood Mackenzie’s ongoing digital transformation that is redefining how customers interact with our comprehensive, industry-leading data, and the value they get from it.

The Global Head role is therefore a key leadership role in delivering on our strategy and transforming the way we source, validate and publish our datasets.  The team will be responsible for the industry expertise required in this transformation of our data. 

To be successful you will need to have exceptional leadership and people management capabilities to take the team through a period of significant change. This will include working with the teams to change long embedded workflows and transition processes to the new central data operations team.  Where required it will also involve recruiting new talent to meet the skills and capabilities required.

It will be essential to have strong relationships and work in close collaboration with the central Data Organisation, as well as the Strategy & Improvement team, to help develop and ensure Research data teams embed best practice.

You will work closely with other members of the research leadership team, Data SMEs and the Research Centres of Excellence to ensure we have a pipeline of new differentiated data-sets, and we are interrogating the data in innovative ways to surface industry leading insights.

As a senior leader you will be a member of our Upstream & Corporate leadership team, as well as sitting on the Research Data leadership team.  You will be expected to contribute new ideas, engage in constructive debate and align around key decisions and approaches for the direction of these groups.  You will contribute to (and often lead) several global strategy initiatives.

About you and how you can excel in this role

Ideally you will already be leader in a subscription data analytics business or a hold a similar leadership role in a company in a relevant industry.

You possess a mix of industry subject matter, technical and analytical skills, coupled with commercially innovative approach to business. You are also confident and energetic when facing-off with senior stakeholders and the broader business – you will need to bring people along on your journey and inspire belief in the team and what it offers. 

You have a proven track record in the planning, building and successful delivery of data transformation programmes and solutions for finance or natural resources industry. It’s important that you have experienced leading teams through significant periods of change and demonstrated resilience as a leader and focus through the process.

You possess a good working knowledge of data sources, data trends, and data needs of oil & gas and what data content is needed to meet those needs.

Experience of leading teams focused on L48 data, or direct experience of this region is desirable.

Your commercial and industry knowledge (particularly Lower 48 E&P companies), coupled with your people skills will enable you define our ambition for data coverage which help solve our clients’ questions embedded with their workflows. You will be able to identify data assets and data strategies that can differentiate us from others – ways to enhance, add to, or otherwise improve the quality of our data content.  You will bring with you experience of working with scalability challenges and with python, open source tools, cloud computing and data visualization.   You possess sound commercial acumen and have contributed to strategic development within your area, particularly leading through change and business transformation.  This is possible due to your organisational and project management skills with a strong delivery focus.

About the role

You will lead a team of around 75 data analysts. Specifically, you will lay out the path and lead the transformation of the team from where we are today to the future vision, driving through the changes needed to enable common, secure and consistent data capabilities and data-driven products and services. You will own strategy for building industry expertise in data for your area to create commercial value.

You will ensure that your team produce industry leading data that is ready for research analysts and end-users to produce high quality, timely data-driven analysis, insight and content.

You will manage managers and teams within Upstream & Corporate leadership and build a ‘best-in-class’ team.  In particular, you will develop the team to ensure we have a breadth of developing expertise and provide input on the resourcing and capability gaps we are likely to face in the future to cover our evolving data needs.

You will foster an agile, high-performance, KPI driven, collaborative culture which is creative, open, supportive and dynamic with continuous improvement mind-set.  Your focus will be to transform the business.

Given your engagement with your network internally and externally, you will be able to prioritise what matters to external and external clients and your team. Working in close collaboration with the central Data Organisation and Strategy & Improvement teams you will enhance the quality of our content and processes for all Research reporting and analytics needs.  You will ensure the team ways of working are aligned and compliant the Product and Data organisation defined methodologies and approaches.

Internally, you will ensure team members improve workflow efficiency and the timeliness and quality of deliverables. You will also have the opportunity lead wider projects and new initiatives.
