Job Description

Verisk 3E is looking to add a Network Engineer to the team in Carlsbad, CA.  You will be a part of the Infrastructure team which keeps our systems up and our network secure.  If this sounds like a fit for you, please read on!

The Network Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, support, integrity and security of the data network including both equipment and software which together form Verisk 3E’s client server environment.  The Network Engineer must demonstrate proficiency in the troubleshooting and tuning component hardware, software and networking and in resolving communications protocol problems.  The incumbent must thoroughly understand business operation and provide his customers with accurate and timely technical counsel, and supply solutions that satisfy ongoing business requirements.  The incumbent will individually or, as part of a team, perform product evaluation and business case preparation. He /she will provide technical guidance to development projects and assess requirements as they relate to our network.  Most tasks assigned to the Network Engineer are complex and require significant planning and testing. The Network Engineer is expected to maintain currency with technology and be recognized by industries piers as competent in his or her field. 

  • Operating Systems Installation & Maintenance – Experienced with operating system commands (Cisco, HP, MS, etc) and can help others in resolving operating system issues.  Experienced in restart/recovery procedures and knowledge in communication and user interface aspects of the operating system.  Able to install, configure, and upgrade operating system parameters such as peripheral devices, network interfaces and drivers. Comfortable using command line interface.
  • Network security management.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of diagnostic tools. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering services using these tools with minimal support and direction from others. Assists with the evaluation and customization of diagnostic management tools.
  • Work with junior members of the Infrastructure team to provide guidance/ coaching/training and constructive suggestions to improve their performance in completing assigned helpdesk tickets, network maintenance and development tasks. 
  • Support / maintains communications protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, EIGRP, OSPF, DNS, SNMP, and FTP).  Ability to diagnose and resolve complex problems as they relate to communications protocols.
  • Interact / support end user management and or clients on all aspects of problem resolution and projects development activities. 
  • Design and implement network configurations, network architecture (including hardware and software technology, site locations, and integration of technologies), and systems. Monitors network performance and quality of service, identifying bottlenecks and performance problems.
  • Demonstrated the ability to successfully provide diagnostic, problem solving and troubleshooting expertise.
  • Completes all responsibilities as outlined on annual Performance Plan.
  • Completes all special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Well-developed and demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • A Bachelor's degree in CS, IT, CIS, MIS, Business Administration or related field and significant experience working as a network engineer is preferred. A High school or technical school certificate and applicable work experience is required.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in information systems working in, Network Security,  LAN/WAN technologies specific / in-depth experience with Cisco networking (EIGRP / BGP, MPLS / VPN / GRE tunnels, T1 / DSL / DS3, Cisco 3600 / 2600 / 7200 Routers, Cisco 3500 / 3550 / 4000 series Switches, Cisco VPN Concentrators, Cisco IDS & IPS, CS MARS, Cisco series firewalls, Load balancers, etc.), HP servers & storage and management tools (i.e., HP Enterprise servers, HP insight Manager, ILO, various EVA series, etc.) and MS Server products(Active Directory, WINS / DNS, Exchange, SQL, Clustering, IIS etc.). Antivirus & Web security.
  • Experience with Azura and AWS deployments.
  • Strong knowledge in the installation and support of Microsoft Windows server, including customization and implementation.
  • In depth knowledge of network maintenance standards and processes.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools (i.e. Cacti, MRTG / RRD Tool, Orion, Cisco specific tools, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and execute new technical skills with increasing levels of efficiency.
  • Cisco and or Microsoft certifications a plus.
