Job Description

We are looking for a China Coal Consultant to join our China bulks Research team in Beijing in China. As a part of a global team, the China bulks team provides clients with high-quality commercial analysis in the bulks sector, to help clients to make better decision to secure their business success. The China bulks team play a vital role in formulating Wood Mackenzie's global bulk commodity forecasts by providing high-level regional analysis for Chinese iron ore, coal and steel sectors on-ground.

 

About you and how you can excel in this role

You have minimum of three years experience as a consultant, advisor or related position in Asia Pacific thermal or metallurgical coal markets. Your education background in economics or a degree to participate in a fundamentals team. You have experience with Asia Pacific coal demand and broader commodity market trends. You have excellent organizational skills, initiative, and accountability with an attention to detail.

You have proficient Chinese and English language skills in both written and spoken English, you have excellent excel skills – specifically clear data organization.

You have dynamic personality with the ability to think conceptually. You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, self starter and team player.

You have skills on planning, implementation & control, you have client focused attitude and you have capability to build and maintain relationships.

 

About the role

Reporting to Senior Manager in the bulks research team, you will be responsible for providing analysis and client support on market fundamentals (both quantitative and qualitative). Specifically, you will be responsible for regional thermal and met coal market prices, supply/demand balances, and with the Coal Market Service (CMS) team, developing a view of the fundamental driving forces affecting China's and Asia's coal markets – both short and long term. 

You will be an integral member of both the Asia Pacific markets analysis and the global CMS team. As such, you will be expected to openly participate in team discussions and challenge sessions.  You will also work to align our demand analysis with the China Coal Supply Service, China Gas and Power Consulting, and other China Consulting teams.

You will be required to perform job responsibilities as directed by your direct supervisor or other more senior staff members in a manner that meet their standards and expectations.

You will collaboratively work with colleagues in Beijing and across our global offices (including Singapore and the US) to develop and coordinate information on China's coal market (metallurgical and thermal), including the impact of China on Asia's broader coal market

You will be working with Wood Mackenzie's economic, steel, gas and power, petrochemcials and other relevant teams, suggest and drive methodology and analytical improvements to our consulting where appropriate – this will be done in conjunction with senior content and management staff.

You will respond to client queries in a timely manner and record interactions as appropriate. You will take a proactive approach in developing and maintaining coal industry contacts in China and ensure interactions are recorded and shared as appropriate.

When appropriate, you will present coal market messages and reports to clients and prospects through Woodmac forums, client/prospect companies, and third party conferences.  This includes drafting client-ready slidepacks and insights with clear messages, with supporting charts and tables.

You will provide high quality written reports to support annual consulting updates or ad hoc 'white papers' on key themes and issues impacting China's coal market.

You are able to manage relevant data sets, creating spreadsheets and processes that are organized, labeled clearly, and easy for other team members to understand and manage.

You will provide support to the sales team, senior manager, and content experts for sales and marketing efforts as needed.

You will proactively develop and maintain client relationships in Beijing and throughout Asia Pacific.
