Job Description

Join the Tropical Cyclone (TC) research team at Verisk Extreme Event Solutions in the Boston-based Research Department and contribute to the development of the next generation catastrophe models for assessing the TC view of risk. As a research scientist, you will be applying your scientific and technical knowledge to model characteristics of tropical cyclones within catastrophe models. Your primary responsibility will be to develop scientifically sound innovations to tackle  statistical and computational challenges of accurately representing TC hazard . You will also support and validate existing Verisk TC catastrophe models for regions around the globe. The results of your work will be used by industry and governments to assess the risks from extreme tropical cyclone events.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Develop code and apply statically robust methods to represent characteristics of extreme weather events using observations, numerical weather models, and statistical models.
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate/assimilate a wide range of in-situ and remote sensing observations and numerical model data into the modeling process.
  • Interact with other teams to provide expertise and help build scientifically sound models.
  • Engage with clients about Verisk’s tropical cyclone catastrophe models so that they better understand how risks of property losses are being estimated.

Qualifications

About You and How You Can Excel in This Role

  • Strong knowledge of meteorology is required. Background and experience in tropical cyclone meteorology would be considered a significant advantage. 
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data science is a key to success at this position. 
  • Familiarity and comfort with manipulating observational and remote sensing data sets. Experience in data assimilation is a plus.
  • Strong skills gained through practical experience using high-level language and tools such as Python, R, C++, MATLAB, FORTRAN and Linux environment
  • Ability to gather, integrate, and critically analyze data from all relevant sources of natural hazard information such as national and international agencies, insurance data, private entities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science or related disciplines within physics or computational sciences and statistics
  • M.S. in atmospheric science or related disciplines with 5+ years professional experience in a technical environment
