POSITION PURPOSE: The Electrical, Instrument and Controls (EI&C) Technician will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all instruments, control systems and electrical equipment in the power plant and the associated facilities. Perform work of high skill in the inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all electronic and electrical power plant equipment and systems. Track preventative maintenance and defective equipment work tasks in the facilities utilizing MP2 preventative maintenance management system.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain plant field instrumentation and controls and electrical equipment in excellent working order by performing maintenance and repair as necessary.
  • Establish and conduct a precise plant instrumentation calibration program.
  • Perform plant preventive and predictive maintenance as assigned in a precise and accurate manner; collect trended data on equipment as directed.
  • Maintain, evaluate and make recommendations on improving plant spare parts inventory twice yearly or as directed by the Maintenance Manager. Monitor applicable spare parts as they are used and reorder as necessary.
  • Maintain all calibration records as per regulatory requirements.
  • Service and maintain plant equipment in accordance with vendor recommendations and plant established procedures.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of plant logic and control schemes trouble shoot the systems utilizing drawings and diagrams.
  • Be familiar with plant manuals, system descriptions, operating procedures and emergency response plans and be able to access them when needed.
  • Respond immediately to plant casualties or operating emergencies.
  • Assist in off-loading plant chemicals, oils and other deliveries adhering to all plant safety guidelines.
  • Inspect repair, install and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries, and work with electrical systems up to and including 4160 volts.
  • Conduct trouble shooting, calibration, and analysis on all facility instrumentation such as DCS, PLC and turbine control equipment and systems as designated by Maintenance Manager.
  • Interface with outside contractors and vendors on an as needed basis.
  • Keep CRO informed of activities and plant conditions in a timely manner.
  • Identify and diagnose plant equipment problems and adjust/correct within skill capabilities.
  • Monitor assigned equipment daily for proper operation.
  • Maintain work areas and tools in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Perform electronic and electrical troubleshooting and testing.
  • Inspect, assemble, disassemble, repair and adjust all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries.
  • Successfully complete company sponsored training courses and training, and qualification programs as required.
  • Operate plant equipment including trucks, cranes and forklifts.
  • Complete assigned work orders on a priority basis or as directed by operations, in a timely accurate manner.
  • Maintain CEM equipment in constant compliance with all regulatory requirements regarding calibration, record keeping and reporting.
  • Assist in maintaining all plant areas oil and debris free, including maintaining walkways, entrances and access to plant in a safe condition (snow removal, debris etc.).
  • Practice proper Lock-out/Tag-out procedures and follow all company safety procedures.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment.
  • Perform plant housekeeping functions as directed.
  • Reports directly to and seeks advice, counsel, guidance and direction from the Maintenance Manager concerning all assigned duties.
  • Also supports, and receives direction from, the Operations Supervisor regarding instrument and control activities as they relate to plant operations.
  • Develops and maintains harmonious working relationships with other company personnel and employees of other companies with whom direct contact is required.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • The EI&C Technician operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.
  • The EI&C Technician encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.
  • The EI&C Technician must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The EI&C Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements.
  • The EI&C Technician must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
  • All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the plant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work at heights and on ladders amid constant noise and vibration
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in high noise and/or hot and cold temperature extremes.
  • Ability to work in proximity to high voltage and/or rapidly rotating equipment and in cramped and/or confined conditions requiring overall flexibility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, with occasional heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work occasionally with toxic chemicals including, but not limited to, solvents, acids, and caustics.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, working on feet for 12-hour periods, work overtime and work weekends and holidays.
  • Sufficient physical strength to operate manual valves and sufficient physical endurance for repetitive motions, such as manual valve operation, operating heavy pneumatic wrenches, and barrel moving.
  • Ability to wear a respirator, hardhat, hearing and eye protection.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Work outside in hot or cold, wet or dry weather. 
  • Work alone and in an unsupervised environment.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and two years work experience as a technician in a related industry desirable.
  • Five years’ experience in instrumentation/controls/electrical test equipment and electrical maintenance in power plants.
  • Must possess a driver’s license valid in the State of residence.
  • Knowledge of power plant equipment such as motors, pumps, boilers, turbines, generators, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, pollution control equipment (i.e. dust suppression, bag house, scrubber, selective catalytic reduction unit), AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc.
  • Basic understanding of fundamental principles of mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, chemistry, and metallurgy.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings such as P&IDs, single line diagrams, schematics, and logic.
  • Knowledge of power plant safety, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, heavy equipment operations, etc.
  • Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plant equipment as well as basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, rigging equipment and other implements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
