Job Description

Senior Software Developer

Innovation at the core. Powering a smarter future.

At Vector, we believe innovation is the key to a cleaner, more connected future. By embracing new ideas, forging strong partnerships and pioneering technologies that make energy more resilient and accessible, we’re setting new standards for our customers, and our industry.

In 2020, an alliance was formed between Vector and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to co-develop a cloud-native data platform: Diverge. This team has evolved to become Vector Technology Services (VTS); a subsidiary of Vector, New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas.

The role

We're on the lookout for our next Senior Software Developer to join us on our new energy future mission.

We welcome applications from:

  • Experienced Senior Developers seeking a new challenge, with strong progression pathways into either technical or people leadership.
  • Seasoned Intermediate Developers who are ready to take the next step into a Senior role.

If you’re passionate about innovation and want to help shape the future of energy, we’d love to hear from you.

You'll learn from and be inspired by our team of software developers and at the same time you will:

  • Use your software engineering expertise to build and continuously improve software solutions, primarily in Java, while contributing to frontend development, infrastructure automation and the long-term maintainability of our platforms.
  • Grow in your role and in your career, collaborating with leading global partners such as AWS to build valuable software systems for a global customer base.
  • Work in a stable, product-focused agile team and have a voice in what we build, and how we build it.
  • Apply sound engineering judgement to solve complex problems and deliver outcomes that create value for customers.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by simplifying code, improving documentation and helping the team leave things better than they found them.
  • Learn (and teach) how to use TDD, BDD and automated application deployment for effective software delivery.
  • Gain experience with AWS services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, IAM and more.

Who are we looking for?

Must-have experience and attributes

  • Strong software engineering experience with Java and Spring, including using tooling, testing and development practices that support high-quality software delivery.
  • A systems-thinking approach, with the ability to understand how technical decisions impact customers, products and the wider platform.
  • Strong problem-solving capability and a pragmatic mindset that balances technical excellence with delivering results.
  • Experience working in cloud-native environments, ideally with AWS services such as Lambda, DynamoDB, S3 and IAM.
  • Knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD practices, including automated testing, deployment and delivery pipelines.
  • A collaborative working style and the ability to contribute positively to team success.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, proactively identifying opportunities to improve code quality, documentation and ways of working.
  • A growth mindset, with curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to learn.

Nice-to-have experience

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience with frontend frameworks such as React.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) and pair programming.
  • Experience designing and implementing serverless architectures on AWS.

What will help you succeed

  • You enjoy leaving things better than you found them, whether that's simplifying complex code, improving documentation or refining team processes.
  • You naturally look for practical, iterative improvements rather than waiting for perfect solutions.
  • You're outcomes-focused and comfortable making pragmatic decisions that create value for customers and the business.
  • You care about your teammates and enjoy contributing to an environment where people can do their best work.

Why VTS?

Whether it's the opportunity to work on challenges in collaboration with leading technology firms, build a legacy for Auckland and New Zealand through your work, work in an innovative and transformative sector, or our commitment to supporting your development, there are many reasons to choose a career with VTS.

The Diverge Platform

  • A customisable managed software-as-a-service platform for energy data ingestion, processing, insights generation and data delivery.
  • Cloud native and composed entirely of AWS serverless services, bringing scalability, reliability and resilience to a mission-critical enterprise platform.
  • Deployed and managed through infrastructure-as-code, automated software releases and service orchestration.
  • Performs streaming data processing in state, temporal sequence and data dependency aware pipelines.

What else do we offer?

  • An engineer-led culture that emphasises eXtreme Programming (XP) techniques such as TDD and pair programming.
  • Meaningful, complex challenges that solve real-world problems.
  • Stable, product-focused teams.
  • Flexibility, including the choice of working from home a couple of days a week and flexible start and finish times.
  • Health and wellbeing support.
  • Great benefits that reflect the importance of family.
