Company Description
To enable the fossil freedom that drives society forward – this is our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards fossil freedom. By writing a thesis at Vattenfall, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose.
Job Description
About the Thesis Work
- The Industry Decarbonisation team at Vattenfall R&D is accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to electrified solutions through groundbreaking technology and partnerships. One successful project from us is HYBRIT: a collaboration between Vattenfall, SSAB, and LKAB, which has enabled fossil-free steel production by replacing coal with fossil-free hydrogen.
- As part of Vattenfall’s strategic initiatives towards fossil freedom, we run advanced value chain simulations to evaluate the economic benefits of various energy and industry transition projects. We are offering a thesis opportunity to design and evaluate a UX (User Experience) interface for our internal business case analysis application that enhances the usability of the application, making complex business case results easily understandable and actionable for various stakeholders within the organisation, such as business analysts, project managers, and external partners. The UX interface should aim to streamline the decision-making process by presenting the simulation outcomes in a clear and intuitive manner. The interface should be dynamic, allowing users to engage more deeply with the business case results, interact with the data, customise views, and explore different scenarios, giving the user an understanding of and providing guidance on the implications of each decision, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the contributions associated with each stage of the value chain.
Goal/Purpose
- The thesis will involve researching best practices in dynamic UX design, with the opportunity to conduct user interviews and usability tests to gather feedback on interactive features, and iteratively refining the interface based on user input. The ultimate goal is to develop a user-centric and dynamic design that improves the accessibility of information and facilitates informed decision-making regarding energy and industry transition projects.
This assignment is for 2 students.

About Vattenfall
At Vattenfall, we are determined to enable fossil freedom. To succeed, we must first become fully fossil-free ourselves as one of Europe’s largest energy companies. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.
We believe that enabling fossil freedom requires us to address the challenge from a broader perspective than merely producing energy sustainably.
Join us on the journey towards fossil freedom.
