Job Description

VariQ has an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified Linux Engineer II to support the USCG Engineered System Support Services (ESSS) for Asset Logistics Management Information System (ALMIS) at the USCG Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) in Elizabeth City, NC.

The Linux Administrator is responsible for:

  • Acting as a point of contact and the prime source of technical knowledge for Linux systems; this includes having an advisory role for new purchases, hands-on technical assistance for end-users, installation and maintenance, and upgrading of mid-tier software and licensing
  • Supporting and maintaining Linux network systems, software, and applications as well as various business-function-specific software applications throughout the enterprise affected by the Linux platform.
  • Demonstrating broad knowledge in Linux administration, Disaster Recovery procedures, software installation, license management, and maintenance upgrades
  • Developing and maintaining network security plans for the Linux platform
  • Operating with minimal supervision in a team environment of enterprise Senior Systems Engineers, Database Administrators, as well as Senior Programmer Analyst and Senior Systems Analysts.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert and in an advisory capacity regarding Linux; Supporting the vision, planning, and logistics of the IT Division, ensuring that present and future IT needs are aligned with the Coast Guards Strategic Plan
  • Supporting Linux-Based systems within and across departments connected to a local area network and the organization’s Wide Area Network (WAN); coordinates all hardware and software support services for the Linux platform

Qualifications

Experience Required

  • Two or more years' experience maintaining Linux systems in a small-to-mid-size, a multi-site company with small and mid-tier production platforms operating within a Wide Area Networked environment (>1000 users)
  • Ability to support Linux System applications and utilities for production, testing and development including; operating systems, integration and patching
  • Integrate, implement, maintain and support Linux based solutions for multi-node failover support.
  • Designing, configuring and implementing advanced network capabilities; TCP/IP Networking technologies and problem determination
  • Familiarity with system-based security including host-based firewalls, patch management, and anti-malware tools and best Linux security practices
  • Vulnerability assessment experience on Linux server systems.
  • Implementation of network-based services/protocols (i.e., NFS and LDAP)
  • Able to obtain IAT Level II Certification.

  • New hires will need to go on base to be fingerprinted and get your ID card. There is also training you will complete prior to being allowed remote access. Staff on the base is practicing all of the DHS social distancing guidelines. They also are providing staff with materials to clean their work space.
