Manager, Software Engineering
- Full-time
Company Description
About VIVIO
VIVIO Health is rebuilding drug management from the ground up — with data, not dogma. As a Public Benefit Corporation, our mission is simple: the right drug, for the right person, at the right price. Since 2016, we've proven that evidence-based drug management can lower costs and improve outcomes — no smoke and mirrors, no hidden spread pricing. We're not tweaking the legacy Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) model. We're replacing it.
Why Join VIVIO?
- Build something that matters — Every decision you make touches real patient care, not just a dashboard metric
- Ship, don't sit in meetings — We're a lean, autonomous, micromanagement-free team that trusts people to own their work
- Work directly with leadership — This role reports straight to the CEO, with real influence over technical direction, not just execution
- Grow as we grow — Early-stage impact with the stability of a company that's been delivering results since 2016
- Join people who care — A team that chose healthcare because they want to fix it, not just work in it
Position Overview
We're looking for a mission-driven, hands-on Engineering Manager to help scale the technology powering VIVIO's data-driven pharmacy solutions. You'll lead a distributed engineering team while staying technical yourself — this isn't a purely administrative management role. You'll shape both the what and the how, working closely with the CEO to translate our mission into working software.
If you want your code and your leadership to actually change how healthcare works, this is that role.
Hybrid — in-office days at our Hayward, CA headquarters.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Lead by building — Drive software initiatives from the front, staying hands-on with architecture and code rather than managing from a distance
- Architect data-driven systems — Design and build the software that produces and consumes the data powering VIVIO's pharmacy management model
- Own quality end-to-end — Set the bar for well-designed, maintainable, unit-tested code across the team
- Push the team's AI-driven workflow forward — Champion and expand our use of AI-assisted development tools to ship better software faster, and help the team continuously rethink how the work gets done
- Run distributed applications at scale — Support and evolve complex web applications in a fast-moving environment
- Own the full lifecycle — From design and development through deployment and monitoring, you're accountable for how systems perform in production
- Grow your team — Lead and mentor a distributed engineering team, building both their technical skills and their judgment
- Bridge tech and business — Partner across departments to make sure technical decisions serve real business and patient outcomes
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- BS or advanced degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years hands-on with Python
- Deep familiarity with regulated environments — PCI DSS, ISO 27001, HIPAA, NIST — and what it actually takes to build compliant software, not just pass an audit
- Strong relational database experience (MySQL)
- Proven ability to design and build RESTful APIs and microservices architecture
- Fluency with Atlassian tooling and Agile development in practice, not just in theory
- A track record of successfully managing distributed engineering teams
- Healthcare industry experience strongly preferred
Key Attributes
- A "figure it out" mindset — you solve problems rather than escalate them
- Clear, proactive communicator who over-informs rather than under-informs
- Exceptional attention to detail, especially where it matters most: data integrity and patient outcomes
- Comfortable operating as both a technical leader and an individual contributor — this role needs both
- Genuine passion for mentoring and growing engineering talent, not just managing headcount
