The challenge

For our customers and Partners, UW just needs to work – there when you need it, and invisible when you don’t. Just like flicking a switch.

Our proposition to customers is simple, but for our technology teams, the behind-the-scenes complexity is what makes it so interesting. Learn more about life in our Tech teams here.

We put people first.. It's all about you...

Our engineering and service delivery teams move fast, so we need a Portfolio Manager who can keep the big picture in focus without slowing things down. You’ll be the bridge between strategic ambition and technical delivery, bringing the commercial edge and emotional intelligence needed to navigate a complex, fast-growing landscape.

We’re looking for someone who loves data-driven storytelling and can find clarity in ambiguity, acting as a pragmatic partner to our leaders. You’ll provide the constructive challenge required to ensure our investments are always hitting the mark, all while keeping things simple and ego-free.

You'll have:

  • A solid background in project and programme governance within scaling tech companies.
  • Strong commercial acumen and a practical handle on CAPEX/OPEX accounting.
  • The ability to talk tech to support business cases, audits, and assessments.
  • Proficiency with Project Portfolio Management (PPM) tools like Linear, Miro, PowerBI, or Looker.
  • Expert-level skills in Excel and Google Sheets.
  • A good grasp of financial modelling, including NPV, IRR, and Payback Periods.
  • Top-tier analytical skills to turn messy data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Advanced risk modelling capability
  • Ability to form effective partnerships and relationships with people both internally and externally, from a range of diverse backgrounds, sharing information, resources and support.

Job Description

We work together. Your team and the people you will work with...

Partnering with Service Delivery, Finance, Product and Engineering leadership, you'll align investments with strategic priorities and enable UW to make informed, fact-based decisions. You'll manage the portfolio of programmes, projects, and initiatives that help us to prioritise and optimise our technology investment portfolio.

We deliver progress. What you’ll do and how you will make an impact...

You’ll be the person who keeps our tech investment on track. You’ll manage the governance, analysis, and insight needed to make sure every pound we spend is working hard for the business. Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Maintaining a transparent view of the entire Technology portfolio, tracking all CAPEX and OPEX work.
  • Designing and embedding frameworks and reporting tools to keep an eye on performance and spending.
  • Leading the charge on CAPEX vs OPEX classification, making sure everyone understands the "why" behind the numbers.
  • Providing the insights that help leadership decide which projects to start, stop, or hit pause on.
  • Supporting business cases to ensure they are accurate, consistent, and offer genuine value for money.
  • Managing R&D tax claims for the Product and Technology teams.
  • Creating a smooth reporting cadence, turning complex project updates into simple, punchy executive reports.
  • Spotting dependencies and risks across teams before they become real gremlins.
  • Exploring new digital tools to make our portfolio operations even more efficient and transparent.
